birfield question
« on: Mar 19, 2009, 08:01:23 PM »
ok so im in the middle of doing a front axle rebuild for the first time.
and i think when i separated the birf from the axle i lost a piece. i think its a spring clip that goes onto the axle and holds the birf on.
my question is do yo need it and if so . know where to get one?

its not really neccasary to remove the birf from the inner unless you are replacing it, but yea there is a clip that goes inside there.

When rebuilding a front end with stock Birfields it is a good idea to take the Birfields completely apart so you can check the cage for cracks and the inside for wear and surface cracks. Here is a link for the FSM on the front end and it shows how to take them apart if you do not know how to.

I never put them back in. You don't really need them

You don't need them UNLESS you have a locker in the front that doesn't have a cross shaft such as a Detroit Locker. If the center section doesn't have a cross shaft and you don't have the retainer ring on the outside of the axle shaft, the axle will slide into the locker and become disconnected from the birfield.

Wrong, the axles can go into the third enough the the "sweet spot" for the seal is to far in and it will leak. Making "Birfield Soup". That is where the "Martack" on the axle came from. Back in the day before super Birfields (Longs, etc.) we would leave them off for ease of changeing Birfields on the trail. I once asked Bobby Long if I should run them in his products and he said a yes.

Do what you want to do, I will take the word of Toyota and Bobby Long. I have to much money invested in my front end to mess it up because of not running a 50 cent clip.

Those look like Bobby Long's.  Same shape and look as his 27 spline.
