Birfield question
« on: Oct 07, 2008, 08:23:28 PM »
I was installing my chromo birfields and had a question  when i put the shaft in the birf it is loose and does not hold its self in the birf          for instance if i hold it up by the birf the axle will slide out is it ok to run it this way?

negative...there should be a circular clip that goes around the end of the inner...that is kinda a pain getting into the birf

Who's cromos did you install?  It really depends on who's cromos they are.

It'll work, but I believe it'll wear quicker if they were not intended to be run without clips.

Yeah you should really have the clip on the inner. And it will take a few friends to put them together. Tool list, 1. 4 screwdrivers 2. A deadblow hammer 3. Beer 4. Cussing. And they will go in.  Just make sure you pack the birf before the inner goes in. It will gush the excess out and fill up all the gaps.

Why would you finished an install, knowing it was missing a part, without first finding out if it would make a difference.  :dunno:

I'm fairly sure that one of the first Longfields that broke was the result of the inner axle rubbing on the birfield housing causing a stress or weak point that eventually resulted in a crack.
