Toyota 2L (2.4 liter) diesel
« on: Jun 05, 2002, 01:10:42 AM »
Anyone else using Toyotas 2L 2.4 liter diesel?  I love it.  With 5.29's my rigs running 42x15's and I get 34 MPG.  Makes those long 4x trips a breeze.  This motor is RARE in the U.S., only imported '84-85.  Thought I'd look here and try and find others who might have experience with it.

Nice ride that is by far the best looking Sami I've ever seen. I've been contemplating on building a Sami and now with your post it renews my faith that I can too build a monster out of a mouse. Nice job and look forward to maybe seeing some wheeling pics and other info on it. Hey just wondering but how come you don't have the R151F turbo tranny behind that turbo diesel? I know they're really hard to find and expensive, I just put one in my 85 Toy p/u 4x4 *(took out the A340H auto)* Loving every min of the swap so far.

R.D., thanks.  I plan on installing one of Marlins 5.15 first geared trannys!  Just one of the many inprovements I'm making.  I'm also going to get one of his Toy60's.  The rig came out of B.C. canada. She is a sweet ride.  That Front range full floater is very cool too.

I'll get some wheeling pics soon.

Hey Mike, I live in the Seattle area.  Thanks.  Wheel a bunch up here too.  Pretty much every weekend.  What do you think of that rear steering Idea?

Good luck.  NOBODY knows anything about those engines!!!  Your best bet is to get ahold of someone in Canada.  Call this guy:

http://www.kodiakcustomvehicles.com.futuresite.register.com/

Cody is his name.  He can help you as much as anyone.  Your gonna have to find a very good Toyota dealership that can get you parts.  Not all of them can.

Good luck

That will be a 2L-T
Check the timing belt and tensioner they can fail if not replaced regularly.
If the motor cranks over OK crack one of the injector nuts and see if you get fuel.
If it runs like a dog you could have dead glow plugs or cracked head which is also common.
Mike
PS we have heaps of 2L-T's over here in New Zealand ( most comon engine here )

The 2L and 2L-T have a factory bellhousing comon only to the diesel motors which will bolt upto the G52 and W56 gearbox.

There are 2 versions of the 2L-T, one has an aluminum tappet cover the other is steel. The aluminum covered version uses a rocker shaft to operate the valves the steel one has the cam run directly onto the valve gear.

The main issue here is the heat from the turbo causing the heads to crack. The best solution is to use a big exhaust (2.5 inch) to get rid of the heat.

heaps of parts here for them but I would expect the shipping costs to be high, although $US1 buys over $NZ2

Mike :)

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier I could have helped you out. Dave Stedman at Japan4x4.com  stedman@japan4x4.com can get you just about any part that is still available. Gaskets and a water pump would have been easy for him. Find your part numbers on Toyodiy.com. If you create an account it will show you the diagrams as well. He takes PayPal. Shipping is surprisingly reasonable and quick. He has been a huge help while I rebuilt my 1KZ-t.

Hello everyone, can anybody help me with the valve adjustment specs after I installed the new head I need to adjust the valves. Can you guys help with this? Also I’m going to put a bigger either 2” or 2.5” exhaust on the 2L engine. This truck is all factory no mods to the engine. Stock exhaust is still on the truck. I’m trying to get more horsepower for going uphill on highway speed is all. Maybe a engine swap? Any recommendations for a swap?
