I have around $800, a steering problem and a tire problem. Shimmy in the steering, two bald tires.

Do I get hi-steer or two new tires and fix the stock steering?  ???

I have not bald 30s on now and the shimmy is not so bad but it is slightly noticeable. I put on my bald 33s and the thing shimmies on bumpy ground. It likes to change its mind on the direction.

Where is the shimmy, bump steer, or death wobble?

If it is in the steering wheel it is the tires, usually a balance/out of round issue.  The other 2 are steering issues

You cheapest route would be to  have either the 30's or 33's balanced and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

It's good, as far as I can tell.

Not bump steer, not DW. There is no motion transferred to the steering wheel and it doesn't pull when braking. It pulls to one side and then it'll pull to the other, when running straight. Both the 30s and 33s are balanced.

if you are running 30's  and going to 33's  you dont need high steer,  you do need new tires

maybe new tie rod ends ($10 per side +/- )

Are your steering arms tight?  I drove my 4Runner the 1st time not realizing that the steering arms were not torqued and it horrible.  Just an idea...

Rebuilt the front about 2 months ago, first thing I checked was the trunion preloads, they were loose and have been tightened. The wheel bearings have been re-re-torqued. The toe-in is 1/8in. The steering box has been tightened/adjusted as tight as it will go and is now back to around specs. Newer poly bushings in the front. Everything has been tightened.
The only other thing I think could be causing this is the negative arch in the springs.

I don't know if you've checked it, but wear in the steering box can cause "play" in the steering. Have someone slowly turn the steering one way then the other, while you watch the steering box. Any movement of the input shaft without immediate movement in the pitman arm will indicate this type of wear. If that looks right, continue through the steering components to find any play (drag link ball joints, tie rod ends).
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

That sound about right.

I wouldnt put a dime into the stock steering if you ever wheel it :twocents:

Sounds kinda like you had a tire seperate internally.

Interesting. But since I get the same issues with both tires I think it is an issue with the geometry of the suspension.

Here is what my front springs look like. Besides the box, this is what I think is wrong. But before I tear into this can-o-worms, what do you think?

Ummm.. The first thing I would do is find some new springs (hellofa negitive arch you have there) and sense you are on a tight budget I would sugest you go with RUF you can get rears at the wrecking yard pretty cheep.Tighten up your drag link balls too if there is any play in them.

Good information, thank you all. I'm putting together some parts and some help so I can start of this. I'm going to hit up some scrap yards for a "better" push-pull box and leafs to use in a stock hybrid pack.

Okay, so, PnP in Stockton and in Fremont where no goes with boxes. Hybrid packs are in but kinda fungly  . A friend gave me the tops from a better pack and I will be rebuilding with them. The steering box is giving me issues and I have procured a hi-steer for cheap... I might be going down that road instead.

Question: Do hi-steer now, are any issues likely? Or find a push-pull box for now and put the hi-steer on this summer with a spring hanger and all the goodies?  :dunno:

Well I just got bumped from the hi-steer for a better offer. Sucks  . Now I'm looking for a push-pull power-steering box if someone has one.  :help:
