So...... what would it take to have you an I build a roof rack for my Runner with all them fancy tools ya got :cheese:

Come up with a plan with dimensions.  Get materials, and we'll do something.  I have my old roof rack, maybe we can modify it, for your needs, I am done with it.

Hmmmm.... any idea of what ya want for it or what ya wanna trade for it or when ya just want to give it to me :rofl2:

Dave, this was in my field of dreams. A little backstory.  I used to work for a German, and he made car racks.  He was responsible for every pre-80 rack you see on Volks.  Any way I was his Die maker, in a surf rack business.  I made this thing, and it might work for you.  It will need to be modified.  I might even have some gutter mounts laying around.

Found this stuff today, I got the louvers I have been looking for, too many to count.  Gonna get rid of some heat, should go good with the new radiator shroud.

This is where they will go

I only have problems with heat when I am crawling for extended periods of time.  My fans normally don't even come on with day to day driving.  Got two installed yesterday, and gonna put another two in tomorrow.  I'll post up when done.

My temp doesnt get higher than usual. I just dony like how hot the engine compartment gets. Seems a little hot but idk. I cant wait to see what yours turn out lookin like

A little tinkering around and proto. WTF is it ?

Ok, its a bumpstop.  I made it for a moving table, so our peeps can stop slamming it and throwing it out of adjustment.  It has a 450 pd spring, just thought I would take it home and see if it could be of use as truck bump.

If I mill a flat in one side and reduce the diameter 1/4",  it would fit nicely under the runner.  It would need a rubber tip (on order).  I am also thinking using a SS steel housing instead of AL, just for ease of mating the thing to my steel frame.  Like I said its a proto for something else but might be used here.

Sweet rig! Love the build!   I may have a few questions for you on your engine swap as you know I am going to be undertaking mine soon. Getting ready to head out the door here soon so I will hit you up later on all that!  :beerchug:

Gotcha, I got tons of info, when your ready.

Ok, so....

What did you use for...

P/S Pump, Fuel Pump, Radiator, Radiator hoses, Throttle cable, Motor Mounts, Gauges, Exhaust?

I have no doubt I could figure this all out myself but why not ask to see if there are any fitment or adaptability issues ahead of time.   Any part numbers you can offer may be helpful as well. Biggest difference in our conversions will be that I will be using the manual trans VS. the auto.  8)  Most of the conversion looks pretty straight forward and not too difficult as for brackets and mounts fabrication so I was just curious on thos details and what you did to solve those issues.

Thanks for your time, Bro!

bigarms23

for a radiator use a 22x19 speedway universal chevy and motor mounts its easy to fab and for the exhaust i ran mine on the driverside and use a 4.3 magnaflow cat to your standard flowmaster exhaust for a fuel pump i used an inline one from summit racing and im sure kev will add something i missed

Thanks for your time, Bro!

PS pump - I used the GM one, and adapted the hose.
Fuel Pump - I used an Airtex E8248, though a Toy EFI pump will do. I run a cell, with the stock Chevy filter.
Radiator -  I used a stock s-10 radiator.  Worked great till I tweeked it in a flop, now I am gonna get an upgrade.
Hoses -  Stock S-10 hoses.
Throttle cable - is a stock s-10 cable though it has a mild S to make up for length.
Motor mounts - made my own using gm motor mounts, I am sure you got that covered.
Gauges -  All work.  I used a Toy sending unit in the tank, an adapter for the temp sensor, mines not an SR-5 so I used an aftermarket Tach (you can adjust yours with a POT).  I also used the stock CEL, and added the diagnostic port for OBD1.  Stock GM alt adapted to the system.
Exhaust - all stock to the end of the CAT
VSS - I bought a smog legal one from JTR
EGR - I run an EGR limiter, and it passes smog

Mine is Cali legal, I would do a few things different if it was Not.

I tried to use off the shelf stuff, cause Chevy stuff is cheap.  There are many more options after 97, as in ECM tuning and re-flashing VSS and various other stuff from the ecu.  Mines going on 4 years and I am happy.

What year is your motor TBI,CPI,TPI ?

My engine is A TBI unit from a '93 GMC 1/2T pick up with an auto. So mine doesn't have the EGR or smog pump stuff at all. What makes the the VSS that you got smog legal?  :headscratch: My truck isn't an SR5 Either so the only thing I have is a temp gauge, fuel gauge, idiot lights and Speedo which I planned on reusuing as much of that as practical. I have an after market tach, so no worries there.  I was thinking about using an EFI Toy tank with pump and all but if it turns out to be easier and cheaper I will just to do an external electric pump like you did and leave it at that Especially since I love having a 19 gal tank!  :gap: I also planned on using the GM ALDL Connector and CEL since I would have to smog it still. I will also use the stock P/S pump if all it takes is to adapt the pressure hose.

Thanks for the info so far.   I will certainly pick your brain more as the details of my project progress. I realize your engine is slightly different than what I'll be installing. But I ain't Scared!  :eyebrow:

I agree on using off the shelf stuff since it is cheaper and far easier to acquire if something should go awry when in BFE.  :gap:

4RunnerChevy

VSS seems to be something they look for.  It Either has to be a working GM type or one that is smog exempt with an EO number.  I danced around this and got dinged with the ref.  The one from JTR is hooked inline with the speedo cable (at the T-case) and has outputs to your ECU.  My 92 CPI motor throws codes without it, but if you ground the input to the ECU, the codes go away (again, you will get dinged if the ref looks for the actual VSS).  They run about $100 from jagsthatrun.

Since you are going TBI, your TOY fuel pump will have too much pressure.   I believe you can just disconnect the pump and draw fuel through it with a 15 PSI external pump.  The external pump I use will also not work in your application do to higher pressure, but AirTex does make a TBI pump, google it.

Since your using a Auto ECU, you will need to ground the P/N input to the ECU, or figure something out.  Your idle is affected in P/N, not a big deal.

Let me know if there is anything else, glad to help.  When you get started, I wanna see pics  :gap:

fordh8r

Oh, got it! It's because the VSS you're using also incorporates the cable drive for your speedo! Wasn't thinkinh about that. Yeah, already familiar with every other aspect of the electronics. Been wrenching on this stuff since way back! :)
