t case noise going from load to deceleration
« on: Dec 17, 2008, 09:58:52 PM »
I have a turbo trans w/ dual cases and stock gears. In 4 hi I'm getting a rattle type noise only happens between load  and deceleration. Both drivelines have cv's and are in good shape. Where should I start troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance for any input, Brent

I tend to think you're in transfercase hell...I friend had a 2nd case installed in his daily driver and he had the same loud rattle...NO other changes were made during this upgrade so we figured it must have been the case so he had it replaced with another and the same thing. It was a noise that would have driven me nuts if it was in my dual case but mine was quiet so thank God for that.  I wonder if it has more to do with the coupler between the 2 cases.

Yes it's a marlin completely assembled  23 spline reduction box and a stock turbo t case. It's the first time i have used 4 hi range since the box was installed usually go straight to lo range.

Did you replace any bearings in the tranny?  A bad input/output bearing can make a similar noise, and the duals may just amplify it.

Mine does it too. It is normal. Marlin said so himself, I had him ride with me.

No new tranny bearings. the noise is getting louder the more its driven. sure sounds like its coming from inside the t case not the crawler box. Got a mechanics stethascope gonna try to isolate where its coming from, with my girl drivin so I can poke around .

That's a good idea.  As has been said, marlin will make it right if it's an issue with their parts, but if not they'll still do what they can to help you out.

Mr Blue did you figure out the grinding/growling noise? I’m running an 86 turbo trans 228 crawl box 4.7 in back with the exact same problem. Only happens in 4wd.
