i did a search or the subject, and found out alittle but not enough. i guess i can agree it depends on where u wheel. i'm from around the southeast, and we have alot of creek beds we ride. i think that a longer wheel base does better where i wheel. i guess my question is.  what would be a good allaround wheel base? mine is around 110 and i have 35" tires at this time (i think it needs alittle bigger tire maybe 38)

THK Matt

110 is fine

the 4runners and reg cab short box's have the best WB in my opinion.

up here my 87 ex cab gave me hell on certain :pokinit:... too long.
so it depends on what you use it for and where you use it.

108* is probably ideal :P

I think in most situations a short wheels base is better.

thanks.
I find myself always being the one who gets stuck and hung up more then all my SWB buddys.
So it will be nice to be in a 4Runner.

LWB with good departure angles is better in hills IMO. LWB rigs also do better in high speed bumpy conditions, wash boards, fire roads and the like.

The shortest rig in my group of yota's is about 114" running 37" iroks.  I'm at 128 1/2 with 42" tsl's and we don't get hung up on much due to low lifts, flat belly's and a lotta luck.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

boggerunner

i run 117 on my 85 excab on 37 mtrs, and it works great for colorado wheeling. i used to have a 79 short bed on 35's that got scarry in a few spots trying to go end over

SolidAxle

in stock form id say shortbed like HO. once your lifted and on 35-40inch tires the longer wheelbase is probably better. I have a stock extracab with 32's and I've hit the bed right before the wheelwell breaking over on the only rock for miles lol. had i had a short bed my rear tires would have caught up in time. Altough the rest of the time my truck pwns the jeeps haha. not kidding  :driving:

As mentioned in the first post it depends on where you wheel and the type of terrain.  Around here if you are over 110" you might be askin' for trouble.  I like about 105" on 38.5s for our local sandstone and lava strewn wash bottoms and slickrock.  Any shorter than that and you can't climb well enough on the steep stuff.  Another place where a long wheelbase can be a problem is on our sharp waterfall ledges.

Again though, it DOES really depend on the wheelin'...

i love the swb, the lwb definately ride smoother but they cant turn as sharp, you are more likely to get highcentered.... 105-109 is the ideal wb for me, and good departure angles..... depends on your driving style and what/where you wheel the most!

sidenote: I have never been high centered and I really dont think 10 inches is really going to effect turning radius that much...

The only time I've noticed a lack of breakover angle in my XtraCab was when trying to follow a wrangler over a dirt mound. I haven't really had any issues turning it once you adjust to the length.  Run it like a semi....all the way into the turn and then cut the wheel over.

I vote for the stability of the XtraCab.

THK Matt

thats true too. I got used to the "driving it like a semi"

the stability is nice.

I loved my lwb 80 pickup the stability was unbeatable. Not only that but you could run triples if you really want to. FYI Marlin has a lwb.

lilbuddy

Im at 108 right now in my 02 tacoma. My 97 tacoma was 125.5. My runner was 109. My first gen long bed was around 116.

I think the best would be right in between my 97 taco and my first gen. Id say right around 120 would be the best. Not too long for stuff but also not too short.

I'm at 111" right now and my truck works fine but I'm going to try to squeeze a few more inches so that I can be between 113 to 115" then I'll be happy  :beerchug:
