Team Izzy's new KOH/Werock buggy
« on: Nov 03, 2008, 07:37:32 AM »
After a great season with Dave Cole and Team Slow Speed. Team Izzy is stepping up to Promod and getting Kathleen back in the driver seat in our new buggy.

I started with a 5.3 from one of my work trucks that was being retired.

Then I went to work on a HP D60 I had for the front axle. Our Stock Mod jeep will donate the 700r4 trany, 4.3 atlas II and rear D60

I ordered up a few feet of 4130 in various diameters and thicknes and warmed up the bender. Our son Zach the ham had to get in on the action.

More to come but here is a sneak preveiw of the current status

thats all for now.

Update

here is the back subframe and mock up rear 4 link. the links hit the crossmember at full stuff so I came up with a new one for clearance.

Another veiw of the frame and engine and the stock mod in the back ground in the process fo being stripped.

Shock hoops, seats and the belt line tube are in.

the roof line under way. All the tubes for the  roof and sides have a slight raduis rolled into them to give the car a little more flow to the lines. you don't see it right away but it makes a diference.

I started to pull the engine from the donnor truck on the 3rd of september working nights and weekends in my garage. Nice garage but just a garage no pros here.

Huge Thanks to Dave, Chris and everybody who has lent  hand getting this theing rolling for the Womens event.

a few more pics.

Here is a pic of the Working end of an Easy button hydro shock. I'll let you figure it out. This car will have them in the Crawling form but not in KOH form.

A pic of the back inthe working stages. Just adding something to make it different

Here is the top of the cage the way I thought I wanted it. It looked really good but in a strange way. You can really se the radius in the tube this way.

Here is the top when I though it was finished so I said " looks good I'll weld it in solid"

Then of course I cut it all off and did it right. :shaking: You can't see the radius as well but the shorter spans of tube make me feel much better about going fast in the desert and doing those huge little Rich drops.

That is for now I gotta run

Thanks guys

Today’s update.

Front view of the eyebrow windshield top bar. IF you look closely you can see it is radiused not just a v bent into the bar. Gives a little personality to the look.

Front shot of the windshield and v braces

Another front shot showing the radiused dash bar

Starting to look like something now

That all for now

Update

Yes the rig is running and testing but let’s get up to date at least.

Stripped for final welding and here we are working on the oil pan skid. The left side exhaust crosses under the pan and needs a skid as well.

My best employee working on making a bracket out of a piece from the scrap heep.

Stripped and starting to go together. I left the axles on for ease of moving around the shop.

I did not take many pics during the crunch but here it is the day we started the engine for the first time as a new buggy 10-29-08. One of the many late nights Dave Cole put in with me. Chris Cabrera also put many hours in as well but he hides when cameras are around

Here is the new owner test fitting her new ride.

My machinist turning out spacers

That’s it for now I’ll take some close ups of how I sincerely flattered Randy Slauson  on the steering column used a brake booster from a Samurai as well as exhaust routing and other stuff. If you want to see anything or have comments post up.

What do you want to know?
suspension is 4 link front and rear 2" coilovers with 2" triple bypass @ each corner, air bumps and horse power. lots of tuning will go into going fast as well as a full compliment of GPS and race radios with intercom.

Looking good man.  I want to see that part that amazed Randy.  I'm hoping to meet up with him during christmas time and hit the hammers in my buggy.  More and more guys are running the 5.3's and 6.0s.  I can't wait to get mine up and running.  Keep posting pictures.  You're giving me inspiration.

BTW what made you decided to run the Truxus tires.  Seems unconventional to what most of the KOH buggys are running.

It is an invite only race so you can compete in whatever you want but you need an invite from Hammerking Productions. I start 73rd right next to John James in the Marlin Crawler F-toy. the F-toys do really well wit the slow and steady approach. Brett Porter took 5th in one last year .

IF Imitation is the sincerest form of Flattery then I flattered Randy with a direct copy of his steering column that is all.

I compete on Truxs mts and they are the best tire for crawling hands down in the sticky compound. For KOH they kill the rocks and are not so agresive that they dig too much in the sand. I can run them with a bit more preasure to reduce pinch flats and still walk back door and soem of the other hard lines like nothing. I am Sponsored but would pay to run them if I were not. I have sat by the course in the last 2 KOH fixing flats of another brand. I am trying to avoid that.

Thanks

4 wheels and a motor. Most guys with the invite know the hammers enough to bring the apropriate rig. I would love to use your bug as traction on the first rock section you were stuck on.

Little update no pics.

I ran the buggy through the desert this weekend just to shake it down before I take it apart and finish it right. Some of the last minute stuff is just not good enough for the KOH race.

The good.

Gearing was just right for the motor pulled great in high range and still has enough speed in low to get from rock to rock in the canyons.

Radiator did its thing well just need a lower temp fan switch I was concerned but now I think it will be OK.

Comfort was great, need new seat belts and still had the beat up Mock up PRPs in there. They work fine just have a nice coat of gear oil and welding burns so I need to swap out the seats. Brake pedal is too close to the seat and to close to the floor. Easy adjustments

Brakes Were GREAT, it is a combo of a Samurai booster, 79 Mercury Grand Marqi with hydro boost 1.125" master cylinder and the plunger from a YJ or XJ makes the swap a bolt on. I used the bracket, pedal and booster right out of the sammy welded to the tubes then replaced the sammy plunger with a yj plunger and the MC bolts right up. rotors are off an 81 chevy 4x4 3/4 ton front axle and the calipers are single piston chevys I use 1975 4x4 1/2 ton as the order vehicle @ the parts store. They would lock up any time I needed and the auto with 1700 stall converter would not drive through them like it did in the stock mod.

The Bad.

Water in the tires is bad for driving fast. I let out all I could with out breaking down the tire but the small amount left in the fronts would cause a bad wheel bounce above 45mph. A couple times I did not think I was gonna get it to stop. 65mph was all I could muster till I thought I was gonna loose it right there on the lake bed.

The trimmed ends of zip ties that you don't find and throw away are on or near the exhaust and will scare the crap out of you when they burn off.

I have Lots of shock tuning to do!!!

When you remove the foam from a new fuel cell little pieces break off and clog your fuel filter. I have spent too many hours digging foam from fuel cells while inthe middle of the desert. I still don't know what it is supposed to do. It does not slow down a leak, or make fuel less flamable. reduces slosh I guess but I don't care I hate the stuff. I removed it before I installed the tank but I did not think about the left over stuff.

5.3s dont run well on 20psi of fuel preasure. A clean fuel filter lets the pump make 60psi and then they run great agian for a little while, then a clean fuel filter.........

Thats all I got now. pics tomorrow

Some thing I thought was pretty cool,

I have a few sets of coilovers but  no 14”x2” that I wanted as the coil carrier for the rear. I did have a set of 10”x2” no need to mention brand and about 5 feet of 7/8” nitro rod. So I ordered up a couple 14” coil over bodys from Rock Buggy Supply ( I should mention here how cool Scott has been with all the pricing and questions I have asked for. Not to mention getting parts fast and great prices) then I went to work @ the lathe  on a piece of nitro rod.

Here is the 10” shaft next to the new 14” shaft and a piece of nitro rod I had left over.

Then the shaft assembled and ready to install in the shock. You can see the valving notes that I took  on the notebook under the shaft. You may ask why I  built new shafts when you can buy a new on for around $30. One of the reason I love 4wheeling is the chance to build cool stuff and since I had the rod already I just wanted to see if I could do it.

Here is the steering column I made. It is a direct copy of the one Randy Slauson did on his new buggy. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I love his rig and could never dream of doing the work he does but I will borrow an Idea or 2 if I can.  The gauge panel was made for me custom by my 13 year old son about 10 minutes before the rig went on the trailer for the womens event. I may just leave it for fun.

Here is a pic of the brake booster and pedal bracket. As you can see I removed it from a parts samurai I have out back and installed it in the new buggy. It is amazing how dirty things look in pics. One other thing, it had not rained in 100 plus days in SoCal then the first day I have it out to be plumbed @ G&J it rains all the way up there and back. I also rained hard on the saturday night of the women”s event. Thats why the little bit of spot rusting.

The master cylinder portion which is from a 79 mercury with hydro boost and 4 wheel discs. It fits right on the sammy booster with a plunger swap from a YJ or XJ

That’s it for now.

guess you didnt understand my question.
I know you have to have A DRIVETRAIN.
I was asking if you could have "stock"
or did it have to be V8 stuff or what.

like to have Formula Toy, there is requirements.
has to retain the frame and axles along with many others.

does that clear it?
