Hello my name is gotrocks and I'm a toyota-holic.
« on: Aug 19, 2008, 11:24:06 PM »
I'm officially addicted.  I just bought my 12th toyota and I don't know how to stop.  LOL

For the past few months I've been keeping my eye out for something to beat up in the mountains for cheap.  I love the tacoma but mrs.gotrocks isn't to keen on me taking that up wheeling sometimes because she doesn't want me denting it up and I don't blame her.  We talked about selling it but after talking about it more and more we decided that it was nice having a DDable truck that had A/C and cruise and was comfortable to drive.  Besides she wants to have her own rig to wheel and I don't mind that at all.  So selling it at the moment wasn't really an option.

To make this matter worse, my buddy just bought a 80 shortbed a few weeks ago.  He's wanting to build it up on a tight budget and have something that you wouldn't be worried about bumping trees with or putting a little rockrash on.  This led me into looking for parts for him.  BAD IDEA.  I knew a guy who had a transfercase that he needed for dual cases.  So after a bit of talking to this guy I found out he had just got set of axles with 5.71 gears, homebrew crossover, that was welded and spooled for cheap.  This was bad for me because I have a weakness for toyota parts.  Then I found out what truck they had been under and how much the truck was being sold for.

In all I'm buying a shortbed frame with a 85 ex. cab and bobbed/chopped bed to match with a EFI.  Its the exact setup that I've wanted for years.  A shortbed frame with a ex cab on it.  All the work has been done so all I need to do is build bumpers and do a little DC FAB suspension work along with a cage.

Pictures will come tomorrow when I get it home.  I'm really excited about this truck because it is the perfect mountain rig for me and I won't mind putting a scratch on it.

Plans for the build are:
Lower the truck (it has a 3" body lift) it had 39.5's and 5" skyjackers
Find leaf springs
Onboard air
DC FAB Interior cage
DC FAB Bumpers
DC FAB rear tire mount

Future plans:
Longfields
Real Highsteer
Dual cases
New paint job

Possible upgrades down the road:
linked with bed cage
ARB's

Here are some pictures.  Sorry this took me so long.  I'm trying to get another project out of the shop so I can start on this.

Some interior shots.  Like I mentioned it is a SR5.  The original cab was rolled and so this one doesn't have the sunroof.  I have another dash that I'm putting in to replace the guages.  The new dash will have the clinometer, altimeter to match the SR5 theme.

And last here are the axles thats going under it.  Like I mentioned in the first post.  The guy who owned the truck was going to part it out.  I bought the axles from a different guy than the owner of the truck.  Thankfully I was able to save the truck before it got all parted out.

The ghetto steering arm.  I hope to sell a couple things so I can afford a new steering setup from marlin.

Did I mention that i also scored a set of rock sliders as well.

Well I just went down to my local trail gear shop thats now not bringing in any more products and I got a screaming deal on a high steer setup.  Normally I would not buy the trail gear stuff but for this rig cheap is ok.  The plan is to have this truck wheelable by next weekend.  I'll be posting up lots of pictures and what not throughout the week.

I'm keen to see this truck done.
What size tires are you going to run?

Updates coming tonight.  I just came in from the shop and I almost have it on its tires again.  I pulled the t-case out of the Taco Libre and I'm putting the setup in this truck.  The tacoma doesn't see the kind of wheeling I'm hoping to do with this truck so its not necisarry to have a dual ultimate with a longfield output is the tacoma.  So another adapter is on the way from marlin to build a stock duals setup that will stay in the tacoma.

Todays updates will hopeufully include.
Longfields installed
Rebuilt front axle
Leaf Springs installed
High steer installed
Dual cases installed

Hopfully Saturday night will have:
Dual Case Crossmember installed
Body lift removed
Rock Sliders installed
Rear D-Shaft shortened

The plan is to wheel this weekend.  I have all the parts sitting in the shop ready to be installed so lots of updates coming within the next few days.

I just noticed my list from above.  I didn't wait to long to do my future plans.  I decided to just go ahead and put the good parts because I always break birfields and I don't want to break the t-case stuff.  Those of you who know how I wheel will understand that there is no overbuilding for me.  Just building to stay alive.

Here's the updates for tonight.  I have more but didn't get a chance to get pictures.  I ran out of time to put the longs and cases in tonight but I got the axles mounted and dual cases from the tacoma ready to bolt it.

I'm disassembling the front axle right now and hope to get the longfields in and the axle rebuilt tomorrow night along with the highsteer.

The previous owner had mounted the axle WAY forward.  I don't mind this because I hope to run 39's in the rocks and maybe my 42's in the snow.  I know the shackle mount doesn't look right but trust me its right dementionally.  The mount is way forward from the typical setup.

Here's the rear all welded up.  The shackle swings out past the bumper which gives me and awesome departure angle.

This is where the I stopped for tonight with the axle partly torn down.  The axle seals are shot because I have gear oil in the hub.

Thanks guys I'm pretty excited about this too.  This truck is in the perfect condition for a wheeler IMO.  I don't like rigs that looked trashed but I don't want a trailer queen that would cost me $2k-$5k to fix if I flopped it into a rock or tree.
