Fuel not getting fuel while starting...
« on: Sep 11, 2008, 08:35:36 PM »
The '81 superbeater runs pretty good once you get it started, but it seems to take forever to get fuel to the engine when it's sat for a while.
After you have it running and shut it off it fires right up again, which leads me to beleive the fuel isn't staying where it's supposed to be when it sits for a while.  I'm used to EFI so I'm a little lost.  What is the usual culprit or offending part?

It has a brand new fuel pump.

Carb is draining while sitting.

Check the fuel lines for cracks. maybe the filters check the one on top of the tank.

Should still have enough in the bowl to start it even if it has line issues. Bowl has to be draining into the engine.

Sounds like a carb rebuild is in order.

Have you tried to get the fuel pump to refill the carb before starting the motor?  Turn key to run for a while, before starting.

:headscratch: Odd, the last time I checked a carbed Toy has a mechanical pump, engine needs to be running to pump fuel. :gap:

The carb was just rebuilt by the previous owner as well... it runs great vertical and on it's side so I'm pretty happy except for the starting problem.  Is there a particular piece of the carb that I can fiddle with or replace?

my 20R doesn't even have a place to mount a mechanical fuel pump. I do the same. put the key to the start position let the pump run for a few seconds pump the pedal a few times....turn the key and walla purrs like a kitten.
Mike

I also use a mechanical choke. Might want to check that to make sure it's working properly. Closed when cold and open when hot. just a thought.

i had this problem on my 87 22r. i had to take the top part of the carb off and take a piece of 14 ga. wire cut it open and use one strand to poke out the accelerator pump jet. after that i had no more problems starting. its the jet that squirts the fuel in when you pump the pedal. it squirts into the passenger side barrel. also i dont think the fuel is draining out, because if it draind into the engine it would make it start and if it drained onto the ground you would notice.
