What zone is she in  :gap:

Anybody know much about late 70s or early 80s winchester model 70 rifles?  I was talking to our old parts guy today and he has one in .300 win mag that he bought, put a box of shells through and never shot again.  He said he probably would only want $300 or so, but I bet I could get him down a bit.  I've been wanting a .300 win mag for a little while as my big gun and would definately like to have a clean older one like that, but every test I've seen of a late model (last 10-15 years) winchester model 70 showed them shooting horrible groups, like 2" + at 100 yards  :yikes:

It's iron sight, blued and has the rich brown stock with the little black piece at the front of the stock.

Not much, but Vern hunted with a Model 70 (.270) in the late 70s/early 80s, and he was very happy with it.  Seemed to be pretty accurate.   :yesnod:

Sometimes we shot ground squirrels next to where he used to live -- Vern & his .270, Danny & his 30-06, and me with your .243 when it was nearly new.  We usually ran out of ammo & beer before we ran out of targets.   :gap:

Between stuff like that and countless hours of chainsaws, it's no wonder I've had tinnitus for years...   Use your hearing protection, kids -- there's no cure.   :ack:

What's hearing protection  :gap:  I knew there was a reason I had that ocassional ringing in my right ear  :ack:  I wish I'd thought it mattered when I was a kid..... then a young adult..... crap, all the way up till not too long ago really  :shake:

:haha:  gotta love the old days!  I thought ruiz lived over on the south east end of town, but is that where vern lived?  I think I maybe thought it was dave's before he moved to jc because I vaguely remember him using an old beatup car that was sitting out there for a derby car  :dunno:

Dave always lived in JC when you were a kid....   but he sold that place years ago and lives on the hill across from the MiniMart now.  Vern used to live on Deerlick Springs Road.   :yesnod:

Nice!  I know an area that holds pigs but have never actually seen on there.  I might take a houseboat out in a couple months and hang out there to see if I can find any.

I got a mid 80's model 70 in .243 they need a little work and will shoot very well. Also have a pre 64 model 70 in .30-06, floated. bedded. and probably the best trigeer i have ever shot, shoots very well. 3 rounds touching at 100 yards last time i shot it.
I'm not as good as I once was, but, I'm as good once as I ever was.

Interesting, thanks for the input!  I'm figuring I'd have to do a little work to it like you mentioned, but I know they're a good, solid action and would make a good starting point.

Was your profile pic taken out at jones valley or something?

Well, went out for only my 3rd time, and only the 2nd time I'd really count it as hunting, and again I saw a buck!  I probably left the truck right about 7am, walked all over without seeing anything but a lot of deer, bear and mountain lion tracks.  I hiked up a skid trail that looked to only go maybe a couple hundred yards up, but infact went several times that and took me about an hour to get up, walked along an old overgrown dirt road (with very heavy use sign) and by sheer luck I came out at the end of the road that had forked to the right.  I've never been up there before so I just guessed to go left at the fork.

Anyway, I walked down the road a little ways and saw that I was coming to a landing, thought I saw something up on the hill that looked kinda like a deer and checked it through the scope - nope, no deer.  Took a few more steps, and just as I got out to where the sun was in my eyes something busted out of the brush and started running up the hill.  Like so many small blacktail bucks it stopped in an open spot to check me out, but for the life of me I couldn't tell if it had a rack or not.  I knew if it had a rack it was too small for me to shoot, so I snagged the camera and tried to snap a couple pics.  They came out horrible since I was looking directly into the sun and had it zoomed out well into the digital zoom, and even I have a hard time seeing the buck with the picture blown way up.

I was able to make out a small forked rack by looking through the scope and blocking the sun, but like I said it wasn't big enough to shoot.  Still, I always assume they run in pairs and kept my eye on him when he popped up over the ridge, and just as I got to the end of the landing I heard another deer snort and looked down the hill just in time to see a doe (or some kind of skinhead anyway) bounding out of the bushes.

I have the next week off and have a good feeling about this considering what I've seen so far  :crossed:

good :pokinit: thats nice to see your seeing bucks, a couple of my good buddies want to shoot bucks but are totally scared to get out and try the public lands even though we each shoot over a hundred public land ducks each a season.  Keep at it and you'll find the big one your looking for.  I was just up in chester for the weekend and saw quite a few dudes in town and on I5 with bucks in there trucks

kneedownnate

That sucks for them, because there can be some awesome hunting to be had on public lands if you work at getting away from the crowds and try hunting areas people and quads have a hard time reaching!

Something to consider:  In the past I was always in much better shape and would cover way more ground a day hunting, but didn't see as many bucks as I have in recent years.  I would always hear and read about how groups of hunters would go out and the older guys would fall behind because they were too sore to walk fast, and they'd more often that not be the ones who got nice bucks.  I'm starting to think my bad knees and hips may be attributing to my abilities to see more bucks since I'm forced to slow down now!

I know for sure that in the last couple seasons before this one i have seen less big buck than ever and covered more ground than any sane person should and this year i slowed down and covered the good county slowly and thouroly got my bucks

toyotamobing

ive noticed that the 2 blacktail that i have shot and the countless others that i was on the hunt when they were shot didnt get up untill i was almost on top of them or they would just sit in there bed and just watch you walk by. not untill you sat down in one place for a while would the buck get irritated or nervous enought to get up and move thus getting shot

Werd.  A smart buck will stand still, but like I said I've seen so many young bucks take off like a bat out of hell, only to stop right out in the open to check you out  :shake:  I guess that's why so many little guys get shot by meat hunters.

Tonight I finally got a chance to see the buck that's been leaving the very large tracks throughout the property, and without a doubt he'd have been dropped if we were in the woods  :yikes:  His rack may not have been terribly huge, but looking at the one on top of my rollaway at 17" wide, his had to be at least 20" wide and very tall, very much like a typical blacktail/mulie rack!  From what I could see it was a 3x4.  His body was definately very large for a blacktail too, and he was all around an incredible buck for this area!

Unfortunately I grabbed the flashlight instead of the camera, but at least I got a chance to see him this time!

I have one and proposed that idea to my landlord and his wife, but we both had the same concerns that while it'd skirt around the legality it'd be bad joo joo if my wounded buck went into one of the nearby neighbors yards to die  :_oops:  Max I can get away from the house is 80-100 yards, and since I know they sometimes come down through there I've thought about going up there at like 3:30 in the morning all camoed out and just sit and wait, but seeing him come down at dusk kinda threw me a little bit.  I just really really hope I see a buck like him out in the woods in a similar situation while the season is still open!!

I'm going to start bugging him more next time he shows up to start cutting some trails up through the rest of the property.  With 37 acres I should easily be able to get a good distance away from any of the houses, probably far enough to shoot one with a gun and be legal.  I think the property is kinda shaped like a narrow gourd, heading up the valley and crossing a seasonal creek bed just a little above the house.  I'd love to clear out a little 1/4 acre spot and plant a nice food plot
