wide tire on 15x8?
« on: Mar 19, 2008, 08:54:21 PM »
What is most wide tire you can put on a 15x8 rim.  I'm looking at some 36's or maybe 37's and trying to keep the old rims I have. would a 14.5 fit or what about 13.5?

I'm runnin' 38.5x14.5-15s on 15x8 rims...  It's a hair narrow for the tire size but it makes it real real tough to push a bead off.

general rule of thumb is 4" of tire to rim width either way.... that said, ive personally mounted 33x12.5s on a 15x6 rim

the taller you go, the less leverage is on the narrower rim... meaning you could effectively make that 4" width difference more

I run 36x 13.5 bias irocs on 15x8s, for a while then I got the urge for a wider rim and decided to add weld on beadlocks to my exhisting wheels. My tires are still rounded and don't sit flat accross the tread like I would like, but the tread is wearing well, for a trail only truck, on bias tires.

dd and trail rig  :gap: .Just ordered 36x14.5 tsl radials and I'm gonna run 5.29's and eventually a garett t3 :burnout: I don't know what backspace the rims are but they are american racing aluminum that I already had.

ATTENTION!!!

If you are still running the IFS on your 93, and you have more than 2" backspace on the rims (15x8), the tires will rub the upper control arms. With the amount mine was rubbing, it will ruin a tire in a hurry! You will have to run spacers to use those rims. I found out the hard way. :hammer: I put 36x1350-15's on 15x8's with 3.75 BS, and neither I nor the shop checked for any rubbing. 1.5" spacers would have corrected this, but I traded for different rims, 15x10 3.75 BS.

Edit: just read your sig line again. but, I will leave this for anyone else.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

my opinion is running a narrow rim is good because it makes it hard to blow beads, also sucks the tire up and makes you get some more ground clearance. The down side is that not as much tread has full contact but when aired down you should get pretty good contact.

the only problem a narrow wheel and wide tire will cause is the tire will wear more in the center of the tread when driving on the street. but narrow wheels and wide tires are also a fairly affective poor mans bead lock, that said i have personally run both 35x16x15 boggers and 38.5x15x15 boggers on 8 in wide wheels.

I was gonna ask the same question today. Any issues with running 33x12.50's on 8" wheel? The tires I'm going with say to use 8.5-10", so I figure the 1/2" isn't much to worry about.

ALL GOOD

that is the preferred choice that i like... 15x8s for pretty much anything up to 14" wide.... after that, then you can worry about wider than an 8"

I was taught that the rim should be 2/3 the width of the tire but I like to run a bit narrower rim to keep the bead...  :yesnod:
