Topic: r transmission/ gear question

after inspecting 3rd gear i noticed some contact patterns from the counter gear. all the other gears look good. a little wear on the 3rd mating countershaft gear. but other than that it looks good. i know most gears should be replaced in sets but has anyone had any luck with just replacing one gear?

is it normal wear  or  ABnormal wear  ??   if  its  some  bad  i would replace both

i think it's normal wear for a tranny that was worn out and used hard in deep sand for a few hundred hours a year for years with a turbo engine. 3rd gear  cost $169.00 and the countershaft is 429.00 from Toyota. wish i knew a cheaper place to get parts.
