Transmission Gear DAMAGE HELP!!!
« on: Nov 23, 2008, 02:27:18 PM »
So I am in the process of disassembling/rebuilding my 1988 W56B with 250,000 Miles. I get it all apart and notice some damamge to the fron input shaft gear. I am not the best on transmission gears and don't know if it is still good to go or if it need to be replaced. Where would i find one without buying a hole transmission, that would defeat the point of the rebuild. Marlin? How much would it be also? Thanks for you input, HELP!!!

On the edge like that you'll be fine.......... (there's no tooth to tooth contact there)

Just dremel the chips smooth so there's no stress risers.

I would also clean it up and use it again. When I did mine I could only get a new price from toyota I think it was like $400.00 No one wanted to sell just a used input gear out of there rebuildable trannys.

I'd dremel those too.

Take it down far enough so that the cracks are gone.     Use the little sand paper wheel (about 1" diameter).

You can go about 1/4" in on the teeth.   Look for the wear pattern and see where it ends.

So I started to clean the cracks up and ended up with this. It appears the damage extends into the gear face/wear pattern? Damnit?

That's fine, really.  The problem is if something in the middle(where the notches are) is messed up.  As it is, a little space will be there between the two ends of the gears.

hmm. be carefull with your core. it looks like that gear may have been damaged when an input bearing was removed. don't use anything real hard against Toyota gears. some Toyota gears have raised metal on the side of the teeth and the well chip when you use something hard to press them on or off. make a spacer or use something like aluminum. i made some aluminum plate spacers so i wouldn't chip anymore gears.  check all your gears and good luck.

a replacement gear is a good peice of mind. there could be micro cracking extending further down thats imposible to see without red dye spotcheck or x rays.  best of luck to ya!
