r150f chipped transmission gear
« on: Mar 17, 2008, 02:49:23 PM »
after inspecting the counter gear on a r150 i discover 1 tooth on the gear thats driven by the input shaft ,has a small .10 chip. everything else looks perfect. should i use it? i could buy a complete used r150f cheaper than a counter gear from Toyota.

Chipped teeth on gears are funny things, some last forever while others go out right away. Do you feel lucky!!!!!!

I'd just dremel that smooth (so there's no possibility of a hairline crack propogating) and call it good.

That area is outside of the teeth contact area when the gears mesh (if you look close you can figure out where the teeth contact).

OK i'll do that.  i cleaned it up with the dremel being careful not to hit the other tooth. it's constant mesh so with any luck it should be good. now i got to run it just to see if it works.

It may have a tick/click but I would run it.

Hell, with headers, you'll probably hear more ticking!!

cause headers often lead to exhaust leaks, get it?!?!?

As long as it is just a chip and not cracked you should be fine, I have a chip out of 5th in mine and except for the clicking it makes everytime it passes I've had no issues. Granted with the big tires and stock gears I rarely hit fifth but it works fine.
