Who's the #2 automobile manufacturer? Not Ford anymore......

My daughter helped out, she bought a Highlander, Tundra, 4Runner and a Corolla this year alone. Sadly the 4Runner only lasted a month before some idiot ran a red light.

Toyota overtakes Ford as No. 2 in U.S.
By DEE-ANN DURBIN, AP Auto Writer

DETROIT - Toyota Motor Corp. overtook Ford Motor Co. to become the No. 2 automaker by U.S. sales in 2007, using new products and relentless strategy to break Ford's 75-year lock on the position.

Toyota sold 48,226 more cars and trucks than Ford, according to sales figures released Thursday. Toyota's sales were up 3 percent for the year, buoyed by new products like the Toyota Tundra pickup, which saw sales jump 57 percent.

Ford's sales fell 12 percent, ending with a whimper a year that is expected to be the worst for the auto industry since 1998 as consumers fretted over high gas prices and the economy.

Ford corporate historian Bob Kreipke said it was the first time since 1931 that Ford wasn't second behind General Motors Corp. in U.S. sales.

Ford's car sales plummeted 24 percent for all of 2007 as some models like the Ford Mustang aged and a new Ford Taurus sedan was unable to match the volumes of the older version. Truck sales were down 5 percent for the year.

Jim Farley, who recently became Ford's global marketing chief after a career at Toyota, said the new numbers won't change Ford's recovery plan.

"In fact, it actually accelerates the way we're running the business," Farley told The Associated Press. "It accentuates the difference between how we're running the business and how our competitors are running the business. It requires us to stick to the plan, no doubt, but it also requires us to really accelerate the development of new products."

Farley pointed out that Ford had some hits in 2007, particularly its Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover vehicles. Ford crossovers grew 62 percent over the year, far outpacing the industrywide average of 17 percent.

i thought this happened a long time ago too.... way back last FEB. with a shorter month and the new tundra being introduced 4 days late (or something like that) TOY outsold all the US automakers in the 1/2 ton fullsize class

also a lot of people in Nascar were pissed when toyotas started popping up

Whenever it happened it Ford's fault. I like their trucks and the Mustang (and the best of those are made by Shelby), everything else they make is as exciting as day old oatmeal. Seems like they don't have any corporate identity.

i liek the trucks (well only the sd and not the new ones with the 6.0 psd) and the mustangs, and the p71 interceptor... but not only towards ford, but i think all the new cars from all the manufacturers suck..... toyota, is finding a way to get them here on dealers lots cheaper than a comparable domestic.... thats why they are getting the sales... toy quality is improving and the quality of the domestics isnt

Maybe I should change my SN to FordTruckFreakChik... I wouldn't own a Ford car unless I inherited it... or it was a mustang

Toyota took over the #1 spot in WORLD sales a while ago. This #2 spot in USA just happened. Personally I think the new mustang (a total girl car) looks way ugly, as does the new retard grilled (pretty much the whole front end) super duty. About the only new trucks that still look nice are the dodges. Even the new tundra is ugly.

haha. well, I do think all the designers are trying to be too bold. To much bulged crap. Especially the new chevys. :reg: It just doesn't look trucklike anymore. It looks retarded. Ford went down hill after they introduced the new f-150. I could go on and on, but I will let it go.

I can't say that I have any idea what the designers at Chevy were thinking, if at all, when they came up with the front end on the HD line of trucks. The GMC looks way better.
