1980 build *2 year update!! HYDRO, Axles, seats and more*
« on: Jan 01, 2008, 01:05:17 AM »
Seems like we got alot of first gen builds on here so I'll continue with the tradition and post where I'm at on mine. I've been admiring the Marlin first gen forever and once the funds get refilled I plan to get the bumpers front and rear from marlin. Here we go..

Truck will consists of the following:
Toyota Chevy Spring Swap
Toy Hanger kit with U-Bolts and High Steer Kit
Rear U-Bolt Flip Kit
Toyota Front Shock Hoops
IFS Steering Box
IFS Box Mount Kit with Heavy Duty frame plates
Toyota Axle Armor front and rear

12" 5125 Shocks
Steering stabilizer
Front and Rear Gussets
Knuckle Gussets

Marlin Knuckle rebuild kit and wheel bearings
New pads and rotors

The truck:
1980 Toyota pickup, 100,000 Miles. New Timing Chain throw Bearing, Clutch, Oil Pump, coil, Water Pump, Windshield and Seal, Slave and Master Cylinder, Distributor

And The build:

Pulling off the knuckles to rebuild them, replacing the wheel bearings and installing new brakes. Since its my first build I'm trying to stay as clean and organized as possible.

Got the axle all cleaned up.

Painted my knuckles and hub parts. All nice and spiffy for the install.

Then got the front finished up, cross member is smooth and all the mounts are cut off and ground down.

Got the rear axle off

With the help of a local wheeler I got the front axle done. I got a 101 lesson on using a plasma cutter and boy do I wish I had one of these all my life!

Got the gusset, diff armor, steering stop blocks and knuckle gussets welded on. I was alittle scared to weld since I hadn't done it for two years, so I had him do most of the welding, but he did get me to lay two beads which didn't turn out to bad as you can see below.

And heres the rest of the axle

Didn't get to much done today but I got the front axle primed and rebuilt the hubs and played with my tires some..

Then I was determined to get the chevys put on the rear, and that I did. Managed to leave the shop right at 1 am. Took forever doing it myself, and only weighing a 155 its not the easiest thing moving the rear axle into place.

But besides that, I got my welder working and laid down some healthy tacks, not the best penetration with my cheap 125, but I plan to trailer it to a buddys so I can use his welder and finish everything off. I think the shackle angle should work out perfectly and judging by the looks of things I'm pretty sure I got alignment right.

Also managed to get the final coat on the front axle.

Enjoy the pics.. (sorry for the blurring ones, I was tired lol)

Well finally got somewhere today.

Started off by finishing up my front axle. Looks all new again!

Then created my front packs.

1st- 1st leaf from a 80 rear pack
2nd- 2nd leaf from a 80 rear pack
3rd- 3rd leaf from a 80 rear pack
4th- 1st leaf from a 84 rear pack cut down 4" shorter then 3rd
5th- 2nd leaf from a 84 rear pack cut down 3" shorter then 4th

Then mounted up my spring hangers and got the front axle set up. Then added the tires. Good part is the front pack matches the rears!

The only problem is my rear shackle angle went to crap! I mounted them so they had negative arch but the weight of the truck was alot more then expected.

So I'm not sure what to do. Move the hanger forward more.. Add a 6th leaf. Or both?

cut off the front hanger today and moved it forward, fixed my shackle angle and finished welding the rear mounts on. Added my rear diff armor and cut my fenders too.

Just ran into a hump with mounting my shocks. Thought I could mount them on the stock x-member and I don't think thats possible and I may have ordered to long of shocks.

JUD- They are 33" Maxxis Bighorns. I was kinda forced into them at first as thats all they had, but after looking at them and reading a few pirate reviews I think they may be a pretty darn good tire

Toyotanner- Sorry if you missed it in my last post but I ended up cutting the hangar off and moving it forward, I then clamped it on the truck and let all the way on it. Continued this process until the rear shackle angle was where I wanted it then I welded it in place. So its all fixed and ready to go.

I live in the canyon outside of Salem.

I plan to go to Sky's this week and pick up one of their rear shock towers for my shocks.

The sky shock hoop is nice but I would strongly reccomend to plate the frame before welding it in. I'm running the same setup as you in the rear and from the way the shocks mount when you get any axle wrap it twists the hoop and eventually tears it off of the frame.

plate?

Weld a piece of thicker flat metal to the frame rail then weld the hoop to that.

I didn't use plate. I just welded the crap outa it and welded some strap from the stock xmember down to the hoop as a gusset.

X2. Doing a nice clean job with your rig. Looking good.

You seem to know what you're doing, but I thought I'd just throw in this FYI for you or anyone else that might be doing this. I've found that about 29-30 degrees seems to work the best for the rear shocks.

1/8" or thicker should do it. And at least 3/4"-1" wider all the way around.
