Standard Metric Stockets
Standard Metric Wrenches
Lock-Ring Plyers (not snap ring plyers)
54mm (2-1/8") socket
Tube of grease
Cleaner of your choice
Jack stands
Jack
Lug wrench
1985 FSM
Pull Scale
Brass Drift
Hammer

I think that's it....

Follow the instructions in the FSM and it's cake.

Don't throw away anything until you are done.

I'd give yourself twice the amount of time you think it's gonna take being that you've never done it before.  I did this last year and had trouble getting all the cone washers off and removing my tie rod.  Also depends how rusty your vehicle is and if you wanna take the time to paint your knuckles or axle housing.  Fairly straight forward though, but time consuming, for me anyway.  Good write up here as well.

The cone washers are a cake walk with a brass drift. Atleast they were on my rig

Patience getting the cone washers out.

I had a couple that were difficult with the brass drift.  :yesnod:   I think I was the first guy to take them apart on my truck.  lol

Just wondering if you also ordered a pair of Heavy Duty Inner Axle Seals? If its leaking like crazy, then I'd recommend doing your best to prevent it from leaking again.

on the cone washers i used some punches and a hammer but after bending a few punches, i found that you can just use a BFH and hit the head of the stud and knock the cone washers loose. also you'll need the 52 mm socket to get the giant nut off. and maybe a pair of c-ring pliers the kind that spread while you squeeze the handle.
lets not and say we did.

you really shouldnt do that....at least put a nut on the end of the stud and bang on that//or if you are replacing the studs it might be ok

I think a brass hammer would be ok.     :gap:  prolly chew it up though.

im pretty new at this and here is my progress with my front end.

im trying to rebuild it with all the right stuff. i already have an aussie on order, yukon529, knuckle rebuild with heavy duty axle seals. im saving for longfields hub gears, sas kit so the vented discs would pretty much complete my axle i think :dunno: . once i have these i think i would be pretty close to having my front end done. for now without much cash im just cleaning everything i possibly can. anyone got suggestions or tips on cleaning the axle housing? and what do i keep from the old steering stuff?

You are doing a good job so far! I used a wire wheel, flapper disc, lots of elbow grease and a pressure washer. I would recommend capping your steering stops and gusseting the knuckle balls

all those things you recommend come with the gusset kit right?
how do you go about cleaning the inside of the axle housing?

another easy way to brake the cone washers loose is to spin the rotor and hit the top of the locking hub with a dead blow. it wont mess up the hammer, the studs, or the nuts. takes about 10 sec. per side

Since you're doing it right, seperate the hubs and rotors and clean out the hub and put new rotors on it. :twocents:
