Valkyrie

Long time lurker and fan of Marlin, finally got a project that made me get off my butt and participate over here.

Some of y'all know me from other forums, I am looking forward to moving forward with my build and appreciate in advance the groundwork and knowledge that is here.

This is the project: a bone stock '85 Runner. 22RE,150k, automatic, 4x4, p/s p/b, cold ac,very original and rust free, recently serviced (timing chain and the trans service done). The truck was originally from the Austin area, so fortunately it is rust free.

Right now, I am looking for many of the little odds & ends to start refurbishing the interior & suspension, and outlining solutions for the sub-standard factory push-pull steering & brakes.

First on the list is a thorough scrubbing of 22 years of wear from it. Cleaning up and upgrading some of the wiring will one of the first tasks. This will be a mild resto-modification, with my main goals as:

  • Reliability
  • Safety
  • Durability
  • Long-distance comfortable travel (with the family)
  • Self-contained camping
  • Moderate wheeling ability

Welcome Chris, I guess I cant really welcome you here since I am in the same situation and never introduced myself.  I've been a long time lurker and just recently bought a bone stock 85 runner as well.  Keep us updated on how the project is going.  Oh and it is nice to see all the familiar screen names poping up on other forums since the other one is becoming,... well you know.

Thats sucks.  I was hoping you were going to build this one up so I could get ideas again.  My 85 is doing well.  I've taken it out a few times, and one was a long 3 day trip through the desert.  I've only really put on the chevy rears.  I am working on the front suspension.

Why not just get another 22re and throw it in there?  Whatever you do, make sure you keep up posted with the new project.

Motor is fine, we will probably finish the rebuild and be firing it up by the end of the month. The 4Runner sold the same day to a local TTR member and the buildup will continue- on his dime.

After working it through, and considering the amount of driving to & from events I do, I didn't want to sink a bunch of money into something I was fairly confident I wouldn't be happy driving on long hauls.

I am glad it is staying in the family so to speak, and I will still be overseeing/performing the buildup.

The new owner wants to follow my outline for the build, so I have no doubt it will be a great wheeling rig.

I may regret it, but OTOH, I have already located a cherry little 96 Taco that is going to be the next project.

I'll still keep this thread updated with info as we progress...
