http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z277/redhead1987/uinta%20lake/ man i'm getting alot of offroading time up here in a stock rig, i'm lovin it!

SAS is on hold for awhile, deal fell through so instead i'm making a complete soft top, prepping to paint the truck, and probably gonna get a locker for the rear axle. gotta get a new tire 1st though, shredded my sidewall on this last trip. camera ran out of power and only had dead batteries, those pics are before we found a skinny (and i mean SKINNY!!!) trail to play on.

I was in my 4Runner when it was still ifs & stock. I was going up a trail at Hollister Hills & I blew the bead on the left front. I switched it with a spare from Fordh8r & continued to climb & with in 20 ft I blew the bead on the spare I had just put on. I removed my spare since now I was off the trail & could get to it & installed it on the left front again. When went to air up & found the right rear bead had dirt in it & wouldn't seat. I took the first tire out that blew & cleaned up the bead & got it to seat. Then switched it out. Got home & checked out the tires & found they were stretched at the bead, thats way I kept blowing them when I was aired down.(Basically old tires). I should be on a NASCAR pit crew that day cause I got good & fast changing tires

I had those same rims & tires on my 83 when we went to TDS 06 in Truck Haven hills & I had 2 flats that weekend. I should've know the beads were the problem back then  :smack:

well back up in utah and aparantly the 4runner didnt like towing that trailer at all. problems that have popped up in the last month:
-tranny needs to be rebuilt
-starter doesnt work anymore. pulled it out today and noticed that a copper wire there at the plunger area is broken off and now missing
-another exhaust leak on the collector pipe
-brakes dont enguage at all until the pedal is almost too the floor. installed a v6 master cylinder not long after i picked up the 4runner.

sooo, anybody wanna help me pull the tranny, starter, fix the exhaust, and find out whats wrong with the brakes?

pulled the starter and the swaybar today and sprayed PB blaster on the other bolts and loosened up the bellhousing from the motor and the t-case from the tranny. found a replacement tranny/t-case combo for about 75 bucks at a junk yard out of an 85 4runner (front axle gone, so's the motor) that i'll pick up tomorrow. after that i need to drop the tranny/t-case from my runner and install the replacements from the junkyard.

He just got rid of that back bumper and fixed his back door so he can open it.  I'm thinking he got that truck too today.  But no hes waiting on a few more parts to come before we tear into it.  How'd you score a whole tranny for $75?

red

tranny and t-case for 75. "pull-n-save" junk yard located in salt lake city. wednesday is their 1/2 price day :yesnod: . normal prices are 79 bucks for a tranny and 69 bucks for a t-case. its the only toyota 4x4 there thats a parts vehicle (they have a 90's style for sale complete). there are a whole lot of full size rigs there, found a late 80's diesel 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban with a bad body (lots of rust holes), but there are lots of good bodies there as well (and lots of pickups fullsize pickups).

the 4runner has a great body with no rust or dents, except for somebody cut a hole in the firewall and cut off the front fenderwells. doors are good for 1/2 doors.

argh dang core charges!! i could only grab the tranny (cost me 65 including the core) because the total for both would have been 115 and i had 100. crap. well, dont have money for the dual t-case adapter yet so guess it could be worse. hopefully it will still be there when i return my current tranny for the core charge probably next wednesday.

question, has anybody ever had an input shaft stuck in the pilot bearing/clutch before? i had to use a ratchet strap (i dont have a come along) to pull the tranny back at 1st. oh well, tranny is replaced and later today i'll get the gasket that goes between the tranny/t-case, then secure the rest of the drivetrain back into place (including those last 2 bolts that go at the top of the bellhousing :tantrum: . why couldnt toyota make those easily accessable? when i pulled the tranny in the gmc all i had to do was remove the tranny hump and the bolts were easily accessable. gotta admit though, much easier to reinstall the tranny on the 4runner since it doesnt weigh even half what that gmc tranny did (i picked up the 4runner tranny without a jack no problem, that sm465 in the gmc there was no chance.)

after the t-case and driveshafts are back in (one bad u joint, great. i need a job bad) then i'll try to fix the starter.

So dan what did you end up doin with your old t-case?

red

still got it. well the 4runner went through alot on sunday unfortunatly. started out with me drowning it in ice cold water. pulled the plugs (broke 3 of the plug wires), cranked it over, reinstalled the plugs and fired it back up. discovered that the 22re can move the 4runner around on flat terrain with only 1 cylinder in 4 low haha. i'll see if i can get the video up. after that i had my alternator belt dissapear and (unknown until today) one of my lower radiator hoses split (my guage in the dash never showed that i was overheating, only showed that i was at normal temp) and overheated the motor. now i've got coolant pooring out of the exhaust (forgot to mention that the exhaust broke again at the base of the manifold), and i need to have one of my tires reinstalled on the wheel, lost both beads on it.

this evening i got the top end of the motor dissasymbled and got to take a peek inside the cylinders. timing chain guide is busted, piece at the top of it roughly 2" long was barely hanging on. i'll get pics up later, too dang tired right now.

possibly, i'll know whats wrong with it today. hopefully just the head gasket. makes me kinda mad, the temperature guage never read above normal and thats what caused the damage. with the timing chain guide it looks like somebody replaced the timing chain but didnt replace the guide and it was worn through (chain looks almost new). the head looks good on the top end, i'll completely remove the head so i can see the base of the head, head gasket, and the block.

if the head or the block cracked i dont have the money to replace those so i'll either part it out or sell it as is. if its the head gasket i'll replace that, take lots of pics (so far havent seen any discoloration on the head), reassemble, and fire it back up.

the water didnt bother it, once it had new plug wires it was running nice and smooth like it did before this trip.
