Rebuild 22r: getting more power???
« on: May 12, 2007, 07:42:16 PM »
I just bought an 84 4runner and Im going to have the engine rebuilt. What are some ways that I can get more power out of the little 22r?
I just am not sure how much power i can actually get out of this little motor. I am rebuilding the whole motor so all the ideas you guys can give me would help a lot. I just want to know from top to bottom what mods I can do for more gettyup. Thanks Miles

cam header 2.25 exhaust, and maybe a weber if you're feeling froggy.

use  good  internals  for  durability,   all the power  is available in the head

you want a  .430-.450  lift cam  www.lcengineering.com is the best place for cams
if  you have the early/"tall" block  then  running a 20R head  with 22R valves in it  with the cam  above  with a 3236 weber  or the stock 22R carb  mounted  by adapter to the 20R intake

and  you should  net 150 hp  with no problem,   and  be  able to PULL  under load  to 6000 rpm

This may (probably will) sound dumb; but, does the 20R head have to be machined to accept the 22R valves?

Ok this is good. I have a header, and a weber carb. So just a cam and better exhaust? What about boring and bigger pistons? How much horsepower does the 22r have stock? I already have a header straight to a flowmaster, a weber carb now all I need is a cam? Any more suggestions?

YES,  it must have  larger  valve seats  installed

BUT  you dont have to,  you can put a stock 20R head  on the early 22R block  and gain  20hp

just bore if  your block needs it,   i went .060  oversize  but  it didnt  really  give me anything but the need for a bigger radiator

the  cam  you get  will make the difference,  oh,  and if you use a 20R head, use the rocker arms  from the 22R(alum  rockers)

I talked to Ted at Engnbldr on Wednesday, and asked about something i saw he'd posted on YotaTech forum.

He says they flow-tested various headers against the stock 22R-RE exhaust manifold, and were puzzled cause there was No Difference. The stock Toyota manifold flows just as good as most headers, the difference comes from putting a 2" pipe back to a 2-1/4" muffler, with a 2-1/4" tailpipe after that.

The Toyota engineers designed a good free-flowing exhaust mainfold, but put a restrictive exhaust after it to pass emissions and cut down on the noise.

Well I guess I will just keep my header and go with a better exhaust. I think I will just keep everything the way it is except for the cam but I thought a cam was for higher rpm's? :sad2:What does the stock motor make? (horsepower)? So just rebuild put in a cam less restrictive exhaust and I should get more horses? I just know that the 4cyl. lacks power and I just want to get all the power out of it as I can.

The engine I am rebuilding came from a yota celica and it only had 179,000k on the odo. but I want to be safe and do it anyway so I have no problems. These 22r's are the same engine right? only difference is the oilpan?  what does a kit cost to do a total rebuild?

rings  bearings  and gaskets  for  around $350

stock  they put out  95-100 hp  doing a 20R head  and a cam  will get you 130 ish,   read some tech  on www.toysport.com

if  you want your  engine to  run  out of steam at  3800-4200  stick with the stock cam,   but with a  20R head  and a  nice LCengineering cam   you can easily  pull out to 60-65 mph in 3rd gear  :burnout:

yes  i agree  with Ted,   as far as "most" headers  are concerned,

Well can I run with a stock head and an after market cam and be fine? I want to go the cheapest route possible.I want to stick with what I have but I can upgrade the interior of the engine. I figure a nice cam and headers with a good exhaust will do me just fine. What do you think? Like I said I am trying to go as cheap as possible I only have so much $$$$ to work with.  By the way I am new to this site and You guys are the most helpful people out of any forum I have ever been on! Thanks  :beerchug: :beerchug:

I also heard that the stock carb was better than anything else. Is this true? Where can i get a 20r head and whats involved in the swap? Or do I just stick the new 20r head where the old22r head was? Sorry for all the questions. Just want to do it right the first time!
