Power Steering Gear Box Rebuild Kit?
« on: Feb 25, 2017, 02:08:17 PM »
Mine:  22RE, 1986, 4x4 Pickup, 5-speed, XtraCab...

Has anyone purchased a rebuild kit and rebuilt their power steering gear box?

Mine is leaking and will have to be rebuilt or I will have to buy a remanufactured one and swap it.

Thanks,

Gnarls.

There are seal kits you can get.  I think they are relatively cheap, try checking rockauto.

Other than that, it seems everyone i know just buys good used ones and swap them out when they start leaking too much.

OK, thanks!

So this looks like it should be the kit for the gear box?

Has anyone repaired a steering gear box?

Thanks,

Are there bearings and other parts that you need to replace internally?

I haven't taken it apart, but I'm thinking it's just the 31 year old seal(s)?

I looked here:  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?action=search2

Unfortunately the photobucket photos are deleted.  And, I didn't read much about the process.

I will be attempting a rebuild of my 1986 XtraCab IFS power steering box because it's leaking badly.  I have not touched a PS box for years, and I don't remember rebuilding a Toyota truck PS box.  I do remember back around 1994 converting manual steering to power steering on my 1985 standard cab, and it was a BEAR getting the steering arm off and disconnecting the steering shaft!

So... I'll be buying the rebuild kit from Rockauto and go from there.

Anybody that has any input on this will be appreciated..

Thanks,

Gnarls.

If you use chrome web browser there is a plug-in that you can download for free that allows you to view all the old photobucket photos. Link for the free plug-in is in the first post of my thread.

I’m in with You Gnarly.
I just ordered the same Edelman kit.
Myles’s used replacement steering gear in leaking now so I plan to rebuild his original 1987 4runner steering gear.

Hey bgen,

I have not ordered the kit or removed the steering gear.  I'm procrastinating because I cringe at that job.

I need to order the kit and see how I can rebuild it.

The price of reman is absurd.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you.

depends on what you're after. for gnarls, he probably wants the full rebuild Helipilot style. I was just replacing a bad box with a good box.

299k.....  You are Mr. Wizard!!  :beerchug:

I.. on the hand... am "old & slow".  :gap:

My experiences are different.

I have R&R'd a steering box a few times, both power and manual, and each time it took me hours to get it off the truck and back on.  On my 85, it came with NO power steering.  I added a power steering box, pump, hoses, etc.  That project took me all week end!  Most of the time was removing the steering arm from the spline shaft on the stock box.  I ended up destroying that box.  I had ALL the tools to do it right.  It just would not come loose.  Yes, I had a torch. Cutting the steering shaft and purging the power steering fluid took the rest of the time.   :blah:

In my limited experience, any time I have had to work on the steering system on a 20 to 30 year truck, it always took hours to remove, repair, re-install steering components and get everything properly re-aligned... but again... I'm not an auto mechanic.  :smokin:

  I'll give anyone kudos who can R&R a steering box on a 30 year old Toy truck in 30 minutes!!  :beerchug:

Over the years, I have had less than good luck with buying remanufactured replacement parts – too many failures or the part did not fit right.  And, as I posted on the input shaft seals comparison, you can see why.

I like using the Toyota factory parts and doing a repair where I can.  I also enjoy doing it myself.  Most of the time I KNOW that I can do it as good as or way better than someone else.

I know beyond any doubt that if I had opted to have an auto mechanic shop rebuild my 22RE, I would be dealing with SO many issues I would have to be on serious drugs or discussing litigation!!  :yikes:

Having gone through my entire rebuild and restore project thus far, there is NO way in my mind that ANY shop that I could have chosen to do the engine rebuild would have taken the time to fix all the old and failed pieces – like the number 1 fuel injector connector.

The number of times I have read and heard about a fubar’d engine rebuild by someone’s shop or a backyard mechanic buddy is sadly way too many.  :shakehead:

That’s just my opinion – it may be worthless.  :gap:

I buy used parts and give them to my buddy's auto parts store to have remanufactured like my IFS power steering box, said I wanted the same one back and got it back, it still works great without leaking a drip or seeping a seep.
Motorcycle carburetors are something I make a living at cleaning and rebuilding but, I gave my Yota's Aisen carb to a shop to have it rebuilt because it intimidated me. Today I'm rebuilding an Edelbrock Performer carburetor because it doesn't intimidate me, I'm familiar with American 4bbl carbs.
If I'm comfortable with rebuilding an item, there is no hesitation to do the job but, my truck had to pass smog and I'm not that guy to trust my truck's carb to.

:inthedark:

Gnarls.
I got the kit and the steering gear is all apart. just put the final coat of paint on the housing.
so far I have learned that the kit is incomplete :( doesn't come with all the needed o rings needed.
also do not unscrew the worm gear or all the little balls will come out. no big deal I will get them back in.
lastly replacing the Teflon or plastic rings is also not going to happen due to sst tools long since gone.
Basic resealing, cleaning and new paint. This first on is going on Myles's truck so no drill and tap for Hydro.
The next one I do I will drill and tap for My truck. Anyone have the two taps required that I can borrow?

So....
I reassembled the steering gear and used Transgel as the lube for all the needle bearings and infamous balls for the worm gear. Well I don’t recommend using transgel as I am getting inconsistent rolling torque measurements.
I suspect that the transgel is a bit to thick to allow a consistent torque reading or is thicker and thinner in different portions of the bore. This small amount of resistance made it very difficult to gauge My preload.
I got it to where I am happy, then decided it will likely need further adjustments when It seats in. No big deal it’s accessible when installed. Started cleaning up the rags and old seals that I replaced, when what did I find stuck to the side of the old input seal. A small little crome ball that belongs inside the worm gear. The feeling of sadness swept over Me like the current owner of the BBT. At that moment I pulled My self together and said “What would Sqwadoosh do?”
I then decided to go against what SqWadoosh would do and accepted the fact that it will have to come back apart.
I also decided to blame Jesse as I am confident He was placed in charge of the balls. Curse You Jesse!
All kidding aside I was pissed, I considered leaving the mistake out of the story and pretending that everything went smooth as glass.
Andrew has been amazing about showing the good the bad and the ugly so I decided to follow his lead and fess up.
I made a mistake :pokinit:

Disassembled the steering gear again.
Came apart nice and easy like it had been apart before.  :qtip:
Installed the missing ball easy enough. Worm gear turns nice and smooth.
I didn’t want to clean all the trans gel out of the bearings and housing so I opted to drip in some P/S fluid hoping
that would loosen up the Transgel.
Reassembly went fast and smooth. I was able to get a smooth consistent measurement but it still differs between right and left. One direction is around 11 inch Lb while the other direction is around 15 to 16 inch LB.
I centered the gear and am finishing the final coats of paint. Does anyone that has rebuild one of these gears recall if the rolling torque measurements differ from rotation right or left?

When I did mine I got pretty consistent measurements in both directions. But as long as your within the tolerance you should be fine.
