I agree with the theory, but most people don't realize how much money they're wasting just to save a little.  Let's say you get a cheap bike for $2000.  How long would you have to ride it to break even?  Now add insurance.  Getting spendy?  Now consider how expensive tires are for bikes, and weigh in the fact that you'll burn through 4-8 sets in the time you'll go through 1 set on the truck.  Is the "saving on gas" theory sounding pretty bad about now?

Where the true advantage comes in on gas mileage is when you already own the bike, free and clear.  I bought a bike to have fun, and any fuel savings were far outweighed by going on rides every weekend, not to mention that I was lucky if I got 3000-4000 miles out of a set of tires back then, and less than 2500 miles if I threw a track day in the mix.

but theyre fun as hell and for me its cheaper than a bad gas mileage truck that i always have my foot to the floor in... :dunno:

when I had my tw200, insurance was very cheap (I didn't even have to pay it due to my good grades and cool parents), it got really good milage, and the tires pretty much didn't wear at all, haha.

kneedownnate

Fun?  YES!!!  Cheap?  :nope:  If you mount your own tires you can come out around or a little under $300, pay somebody else to mount/balance and you can add probably another $50-60.  I think I pay around $157 a year for insurance, but I could get it for like $65 if I didn't pump it up a little to cover for morons.

That said, I still have the original battery in my bike and it's an 01.  I also have never changed the spark plugs, and at $45 a piece times 4, I'm in no hurry either!

i can mount my own tires and such, not a problem for me.$45 for a single plug? jeez...wakinda bike? is $157 a year that bad?

wow, you ride expensive bikes!

NorCalToy

thats what i think too. i want an early 90s era enduro or something similar, insurance should be cheap, still parts available, simple enough bikes...

:yesnod:  Crotch rockets are spendy, even older ones.  Tires aint cheap!  You used to be able to get a set of tires for $200-220, but everybody has raised their prices substantially in the last couple years.... gee, I wonder why  :shake:

A dual purpose bike will be cheaper to run and insure, and in all honesty I'm seriously considering selling my bike and getting something like a drz400sm, but I'd have to find a smokin deal, not to mention finding the right buyer for my bike.

If I were to get a true dual sport like a real one, not just an enduro bike with a plate like my KDX, I would be looking at the KTM 525. I would never race it though, cuz it would kick my :moon: but for a street/dirt bike, it would be really cool and much better for the road than the kdx.

Rockcrawlintoy

75 a year for insurance for my bike, 30 every 2 years for a sticker, tires last a good amount since they are more od a street tire. i have spent more money on my pipe than the last 2 years on maintenance and stuff.

a husaberg would be cool too, but I have a KTM dealer here, and not a husaberg.

arent they made by KTM and sold at KTM dealerships? :dunno: :headscratch:

they are not sold at this KTM dealer

Duffil

NO, husaberg is not made my KTM.  Husabergs are swedish.  That is not to say that, since I am not in the industry anymore, that KTM has not bought out Husaberg, and owns the name.

BTW, Nate, WTF is a squid?

KTM is austrian, and I'm pretty sure ktm purchased husaberg but still lets them do their own thing pretty much.  They're unique bikes, and the quickest way for ktm to kill the brand they just purchased would be to start telling them what they need to do!
