5M-GE or 22ret ?
« on: Apr 24, 2007, 06:19:26 AM »
So i have to do a rebuild on my 85 toy because one of my cyclders has practically crapped out on me. I use my truck as a daily driver, I'd say 60% daily driver and 40% offroad.  As such, I was thinking of taking this oppurtunity to put a stronger engine in. Obviously, it would be cheaper to do a rebuild but a guy can dream right?

Anyway, I was thinking of converting my 22re with a 22ret. Unitl my friend told me I would receive about the the same amount of extra ponies with a  Supra 5M-GE straight 6 and it would be cheaper.  So now I want to know which would be the better swap? Specifically, I have these questions:

1.  Is it true that the Toyota Supra 5M-GE inline 6 is a straight bolt on to the transmission of my 85 toy?

2.  Would I have to rewire the whole truck including the steering column in regards to the 5M-GE?

3. If I converted my 22re to a 22ret could I keep my old wiring harness and only change out the ecu?

4.  Does the 5M-GE bolt directly onto the existing motor mounts? Or do I have to fab new ones?

5.  Could I use the stock 22re throttle body or do I have to use the one that comes witha the 22ret?

6.  Which one would work best in regards to power increase and mpg on stock gears, rear locker & 33 bfgs?

Any info, opinions, and comments would be sincerely welcomed. Also, if there are specific problems with either swap please let me know. Thanks.

2rz or the 3rz!  If your gonna do a major swap out!  The 2rz is putting out the same hp as the 22rte!  The 3rz is very impressive!  I wouldn't go with a 22rte, just get your motor rebuilt, and get the head opened up with larger valves, go with a stage 1 cam, and larger exhaust and header, and you will gain the same hp as a 22rte.  The person to talk to would be Ted Stanwood at www.engnbldr.com  He should be able to give ya the hp numbers you might be looking for!  I talked to a guy in Portland OR that is selling 22re's that is putting out 143 hp for $1995.  www.bnmengines.com

You know what I totally forgot about the Tacoma motors. Never thought about putting a larger 4 cycinder engine to replace my existing 4 cyclnder one. Would the 3rz be a direct bolt on to the 85 tranny and motor mounts? Could i keep the existing wiring harness and change out the ecu?

It's not a direct bolt in.  Go to Bigmikes 3rz write ups!  They just cam out with a wiring harness, I've heard.  Look for Bevin's, Marlin, Bigmike, 4THEWKN, 4RNRICK?, and not sure who else has write ups on the swap, on this site, and on the Priate4x4 site!  As for the power, I was in 4THEWKN's on a trip and WOW!  They rock!  I'd go with a 3rz instead of a 22re, but the swap is a little more than my ability to do!
