Trying to decide which to motor to swap into my pickup.

The pro's for the 22ret it's the same bellhousing pattern of my current L52 transmission so potentially it should bolt right up.
I can get it for $400 with the harness but it has 140k on it.

The 5mge I can get for $200 out of a cressida it has 158k on it but I need the bell housing from a standard 5mge vehicle.
I also need a removeable bellhousing transmission like a G54 or a w56 so that's gonna cost some more dough.

Which one would you do?

Personnaly, I wouldn't use a 22RET in my off road rig because it takes too long to spool. I don't know about anyone else but I'm not running high RPM's when I'm crawling. If you can afford it, I would check into a 3RZ which has pretty close to the same power ratios as both those engines. Just my  :twocents:
In Progress: 3RZ-FE Swap Underway.

Currently: 87' 4Runner - SAS - 5.29's - welded rear - Dual 2.28 cases - Optima bluetop - round headlight conversion - FZJ80 grill - rattlecan paint job - trimmed fenders - Ranger hybrid springs front - Tacoma hybrid springs rear - schedule 160 drivelines 8" slip front - Marlin's crossmember - disk brake conversion

screw it.  Put in a high horspower 7MGTE  :gap:

Seriously tho, you need to decide what you really want.  A slightly massaged 22RE has plenty of power for 35-37"tires in my opinion.  If you want to cruise at 80 all day on the freeway, then maybe not, but thats why I bought a tow rig...

Is this truck your DD?  Where do you live (flat country, hilly country, somwhere in-between?)  What is your budget?  How is your truck setup?

i have 5.29 gears in my truck already lockers front and rear.
I don't have a alot of money to throw at a motor currently. I am thinking more and more the 22ret looks more appealing to my budget.
I do daily my truck at times.
I live in Vermont  it's hilly country and flat but not really in most spots.

I have a new TCR 22R-E engine with a Camden Supercharger on it and it has plenty of power.  I  agree about building up a 22R-E, slapping on the LC Engineering headders with a good exhaust...you will be happy.

I'm personally gonna say the 22rte, mostly becuase I plan on doing exactly that in the coming weeks.
My plan is to rebuild a 22rte long block and run a Garret T-3 turbo and a top mount intercooler and (hopefully) about 10 psi of boost.
My goal is to do it for ~$1000 and have same/better power than my 02 3.4L TRD Tacoma.
I'll let you know if I die. ;)

do the 7m...it's not too expensive if you can run across a junkyard that doesn't knowwhat they got.....hey it happened to me!
