this engine screams for side drafts and race gas!  :yikes:  :burnout:

mmmmmmm side drafts. i still love my weber 38 though. obviously i wont run anything except 91 octane. id run 93 if they had it at the pump lol

if you look closely, you will notice my cam retainers are BACKWARDS! the arrows should be pointing towards the rear.  no wonder the cam didnt spin freely. this head is a rebuild i purchased from somebody.  the head i am using is the original off of my motor. its cherry. unlike this one pictured. ugh...
NO, the caps are on correctly

actually, i was going to go with the EB high output racing head with dual.  its ported with bigger valves (i will be adding dual valve springs) and doesnt pass smog :disturbed:
and i was gonna go with an LCE cam, either stage 2 or 3 not sure which one yet.  i have a carburetor though, so an EFI cam would be a bad choise.  i already have everything upgraded for the outside of my engine......carb, ignition, exhaust, only other external i need is a dual plane intake manifold.
im not 100% sure what im gonna do with teh bottom end yet, it all depends on how much its worn out.  im hoping to reuse my crank and rods, i will replace the pistons i know that.  im hoping to end with a compression of atleast 12.0:1.  hopefully 12.5:1.  i have recently replaced my oil and water pump and timing set, so i dont need to screw with those.  hopefully i dont get raped by the machine shop!
dual plane manifolds dont do much for the 22R

if you want to reaLLY  open the motor up get a 20R head and intake manifold

12:1 ??   i hope you plan on going with propane or  racing fuel cause even 93 octane will detonate if driven at a temp over 80 degrees

my engine ran great before at 12.2:1 on 91 octane.  i never noticed anything weird, it made a ton of power.  maybe i just got really used to driving that old tired engine?

oh and i already bought the dual plane intake manifold and its already at my house so its going on the engine.  im sure it wont hurt!

as for the cam caps, mine were toast so i got some from my local pick-n-pull that were in perfect shape.  i put them on the head with my new cam in place with the arrows pointing forward and they didnt fit. i turned them so the arrows were pointing towards the rear and they fit perfectly.  i even put them on the head with the cam removed so i could feel the line between the cam surface in the head and the caps, and it was a perfect fit and perfectly smooth all the way around. if that doesnt make any sense.............they fit perfectly with the arrows pointing backwards. the cam spins easily and is a very tight fit. works for me

ok so the machine shop told me today i had to get new pistons....so some LCE pistons are on the way that are .020 over.  that means every single part inside of my engine is brand new, excluding the rocker arm shafts. the extra volume my engine will have from being bored over should be nice too. its not much more but ill take every single horsepower i can get.
im very excited for this...
but im pissed that its gonna be another whole week before i can drive it :wall:
its gonna be hard for me to break in the engine, i know i will want to drive the hell out of it as soon as i start it up the first time.  :burnout: :burnout:

so ive been busy wiring the engine bay and cleaning parts and getting ready for my engine.  the machine shop should be done on friday, so the engine should be going in this weekend.  i havent had time to put pictures up so that means when i am done i will post a ton of pictures.  everything will be done clean and right and everything is new. thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars later................................... :hammerhead:

time for an assload of pictures...

my nice clean bored out block

my brand new balanced crankshaft

my new balanced pistons and rods

rocker arms clean and inspected

head gasket surface and bore

balanced and resurfaced flywheel and clean timing cover

painting the block ford blue, this is the frist coat i put on

pic of the other side, it will be darker after 5 or 6 coats

new head, LCE stage 2 mild cam, new stock size valves, LCE dual valve springs and chromeoly retainers

my little weber 38 sitting on the offy manifold

dual plane offy i should say

had to modify it because of its poor casting design

i should have taken a before picture

the reason this carburetor kicks ass

lce pro distributer

so tomorrow im going to get my hands on a piston ring compressor so i can install a piston and check the piston to valve clearance.  the machine shop said it should clear though.

TOTAL MACHINE SHOP COST:   $1197

after i check the piston/valve clearance, im gonna finish painting it and bolt it all together and install it and finish the wiring and then i will be able to drive it.  i think this engine is going to blow my mind..............................................................................

now for pictures of other things.........

battery hold down

cleaning up the factory wiring harness

moving my shock hoops upwards

yeah i drive fast...my flowmaster super 40 was glowing red hot at one point or another...it used to be all painted black, now the first half of it is burnt and crispy

my header scorched the brake boosters paint

nice clearance with the rear CV driveline and dual cases

back of my truck before plating the side of the frame

the back of my frame after plating it

again.

yep

ive painted it since i took this

i put this on the passenger side of my front spring hanger

i replaced the lame stock rubber transfercase mount with this custom one i built. its solid.

you can see it good here

this t-case mount securely supports the entire tcase and transmission assembly on its own. :yikes: i find that kinda cool. thats old engine oil on the bottom of the transmission by the way

slid the budbuilt back on the frame and bolted it up with U bolts when i put in my dual cases a while ago

i need to clean up my front axle, it deserves better. it could be looking snazzy with all of my sick parts on there

same with the rear axle. time to buy some paint!

shock hoop moved up

14" shock tower peeking into the engine compartment, which will get cleaned before the engine goes in!!  i have a 2 inch body lift

half doors in the making

still gotta lotta work to do tho :beerwhack:

my front setup with the steering box loose and drivers side shock hoop still needing to be moved up. this picture has been outdated LOL

hope you enjoyed the pics as much as i do  :beerchug:

supposedly this engine should have 160 horsepower with stock size pistons and stock compression (9.5:1).
160 isnt taking into account my pistons bored .020 over, dual plane intake manifold, msd ignition coil and huge wires, lce pro distributer, and compression probably around 10 or 10.5:1...i dunno what it is yet.  also my dual valve springs will make it rev up very clean and fast. there wont be any valve float probably even past 5500rpm.  the seat pressure of these springs is unbelievable.
so if my compression ends up being high because they decked the block, 160 horsepower sort of turns into like 180 or 190 or more :hammer:

my 22r is gonna eat 3rzs for breakfast!!

Nice, build.  You do quick work

82 HiLux

thanks. im glad this truck doesnt look like a gay piece of crap anymore. its fun to compare it to my first couple pages of posts in this thread.  im about to go take more pics of the progress i made today.

the engine is assembled, i put the whole bottom end together and bolted the head on.  before i did that, i checked the piston to valve clearance which was my biggest concern, i mentioned it before a few times.  it clears fine. whew!

old engine blew on august 22nd
new engine built on october 4th

it took 6 weeks to get everything together and get parts machined and balanced. not too bad

looks good, ready for snow wheeling this year  :gap:

82 HiLux

i know, ive never taken my truck in the snow. im excited.  its gonna run sooooo good! and not only run good, but make rediculously excessive ammounts of horsepower and torque.

today i got the whole long block assembled and got everything torqued down and got the engine on the crane.  put the flywheel on it and then i went to put the pressure plate on and drop the motor into the bay and bolt it to the transmission, and i remembered the pilot bearing for my transmission is in my old crankshaft..and i dont have a way to get the bearing out without breaking it.  so i had to stop and put everything away until i get the bearing tomorrow.  but the engine is sitting on its motor mounts waiting to be bolted to the tranny and frame. after i do that i just have to hook up the small ammount of things that control the engine, mostly just coolant passages and heater hoses, and then put my header on and weld it back up to the rest of the exhaust.  oh ya and i have to finish wiring in my painless wiring fuse block and hook up my arb compressor.
i cant wait to find out what the compression on this engine is.  i asked the machine shop and they didnt know.  this is the way i look at it: if its around stock like 9.5:1, ill be happy because itll idle real smooth and run on cheap gas.  but if it has high compression like around 11:1 or 12:1, itll have even more horsepower.  ill have to run more expensive gas, but i dont mind that at all.  so no matter what the compression ends up being, ill be happy! :yumyum:

This is looking awesome! Looks like you're picking up some skills at work, nice looking welds

I remember building the 350 in my Camaro. That was a great experience but I hated setting the gap on the piston rings. I broke a compression ring trying to use the stupid ring file and had to wait nearly 3 weeks for the speed shop to receive the replacement ring set.  :ack:

It was a great learning experience for sure and it made some good power at the wheels

engine looks good!!  i just put my 22r/20r hybrid up for sale on the forum here.  it ran great!  i got 37's on my toy with 5:29s.  before i built it and i just had a 22r i would have to downshift into 3rd just to keep up speed on small hills on the interstate!  now i can cruise along at 80 mph and never have to downshift when i come to small inclines!  but i'm getting the itch for even more power so i picked up a vortec 4.3 that i am gonna swap in.  gotta sell the hybrid first though!!

:o it runs! i got everything set up and ready to go, cranked it over for a little bit with no ignition, to get some oil flowed around, then plugged in the coil wire it it fired up like it couldnt wait any longer to run! absolutely no problems, everything is perfect.  i just need to figure out where to set my timing! it needs to be advanced a lot but i dont know how much. time for some research.  i put a few miles on it when i got it running.  tomorrow i will do a freeway test by driving it to work.  well see how it goes....
did i mention it runs AMAZING?

thanks! I actually sold it back in '06 after I finished san jose state. I figured gas would be cheaper in a rock crawler than the Camaro  :gap:  It sounded mean as hell though with the 2.5" dual exhaust and 40 series flows  :drooling:

Eventually I'd like to find something like a 2-door Chevy II nova (66-67) and throw a small block in it. Once that horsepower is in your blood, it's there for good. That's a long ways down the road because I want a garage for it first

i went wheeling today for the day to see what my truck could do now.  it has so much torque now that i have it all tuned and timed perfectly.  the cam i got has rediculous high end power and still has plenty of low end torque.  it cruises on the freeway as fast as i want to go nice and smooth.  im really happy with all of it its so nice to have it all be new after having a piece of crap for a few years.  i need to start taking a video camera with me when i go wheeling.   i measured the compression the other day and its just about stock, its 8.8:1.  stock is 9:1....thats lower than id like to to be but ive gotta just accept it because theres no way im gonna take it apart again unless i absolutely have to.  i got some nice rock rash on my drivelines and diffs and axles and frame lol.  IT EATS ROCKS FOR BREAKFAST
