I have a buddy who went down there and he loved to walk through the camp the night and tell everyone what was going to break lol. Kinda hard to come back to him when he is driving a  Mog buggy w/ 404's, isuzu diesel, custom unimatic steam roller trans to a 5 speed then finally to the tcase. Plus he is running 42's. Oh and he has this really innovative rear stear using a ram for ten degrees rear steer in place of a panhard i believe

It can be tough on parts.  You just have to use your head and not take the "stupid" lines :)

I have only ran Liberty (easier of the trails) on 33's.  Patriot is the tough trail.  I would suggest a minimum of 35's, locked F&R, and some kind of t-case gearing (either duals or 4.7's or both :)).

I did run BV Carnage on 33's last summer.  It was quite the adventure (http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=36134.0)  I think I will be better off now that I'm going to be running 40's :)

Yup, both of you need to upgrade to Longfields when you have the $$$.  I did it when I built my 4Runner last winter and knowing they will handle whatever I can throw at them is great!  The other front axle parts may not survive but the Longs will

I still need to buy the Hub gears and then upgrade the knuckle and hub studs to ARP's to make the frontend last against my 40's.

i think i am gonna try to find a first gen 4runner.  i wanna be able to have people with me sometimes.  but i am going to go in a little different of a direction with it.  we'll just have to see.  now i just need to find one for the right price.

Hey, man, I know someone selling an '89 4Runner with under 200,000 miles on it and is supposed to be in really good condition for $2000.  He's up around Longmont, if you're looking right now?

Man, I've been wanting to do that trail so badly ever since I saw your trip report on it last year.  Unfortunately, I've been so busy with work and school that I haven't even had a chance to do a little snow run this winter.  Hopefully this summer...

Mine too.  That's why I jumped on a used set for cheap.  I figured I would have ran the 36" Iroks for a couple of years and then stepped up to these in 3-4 years.  I got the 40's for cheaper than a new set of 36's.   We'll see how happy my 22RE is trying to turn them though :)
