No way! 5.29's suck and everyone knows it! J/K
I'd go 5.29's or 5.71's (edit: if going 37's or bigger) as long as they are set up by GearMan. (no this is not an invitation to start the 5.71 strenght debate)

I'm in that situation right now too, but i was thinking of getting 4.88's. Is that good? running 35's at the momment but maybe in the future thinking about running something bigger. should i go 5.29?

I am running 36's with my 36" IROKS.  I like they work on the trail especially with 4.70's in the rear case.  This is not driven on the street that much.

Could a toyota axle even hold up to a 37-39.5 inch tire? Sorry not trying to steal the thread. Thanks

A toyota axle can hold up to 40 inch tires.  They are as strong if not stronger than Dana 44's.

Why do they break easily? I know a guy selling his rig he has 650 dollar birfields. His rig is on 40s.

If you are going to keep the 4 banger, I'd go 5.29's for street ability.

i would go with 4.88's just for strength.  5.29's aren't nearly as strong as 4.88's.  i killed my rear 5.29's with no throttle, it was at idle.  the dual ultimite helped too.  a good running 22r with 4.88's will push 37's no problem.

They will keep you at lower RPMs on the freeway, but in my experience that isnt a problem at all with 529s/35s. My speedo is only off by a few MPH at freeway speeds which means I'm turning almost stock ratio. The 488s will be frustrating around town on 35s. The 22r is weak enough.

4.88's are okay for the street.  5.29's are probably better for the it though.  I like the 4.88's for their strength since my rig is not a dairy driver

i herd alot about how weak the 5.29's are so i think it would be best to go with the 4.88 due to this...does anyone have any strength comparisons/diagrams??

5.29's should last you fine.  It really depends how hard you are on them.

5.29s are plenty strong if properly set up and get yukon's not the cheapo junk there is a difference ive broken a stock 4.38 and a genuine 5.29 and my yukon 5.29's are still going strong but again the main determining factor in the streanght of the gears is how good they where set up

Yotaboy speaks the truth. Buy a set of yukon 5.29's, have them set up properly, and enjoy 5th gear on the highway.

I have seen 4.11s break, I have seen 4.88s break, I have seen 5.29s break, I have seen 5.71s break, I have seen d60s break, I even saw a guy break a rockwell axle one time. Are all of these weak? If you wheel hard you can break anything. There are thousands of people out there who wheel the crap out of 5.29s with no problems. Don't be scared.
