« on: Sep 27, 2007, 05:48:29 PM »
Guys I ordered the new engine, lift kit, and 4 88 gears front and back for my toyota pickup. Is there any thing I am gonna have to do to the transfer case right away or will I be alright? :-\

What size tires you gonna run? It depends on what kind of wheeling you will be doing, but if you run 33's or 35's 4.88's will be fine you just won't be able to crawl in the rocks.

With stock gearing you aren't exactly able to crawl, you'd want to get different gears for the tcase to do that. If you want to lower the tcase get the 4.70 from Marlin.

with 4.88s and 33's it is near stock gear ratio...you should be able to do 70 no problem (barring any power issues with the motor). You CAN crawl you just have to become one with the clutch...

That's not crawling, that's clutch slipping.

will I still be able to drive down the highway 70?

Yes, you will still be able to go 70.  The gears will only be used when the truck is in 4-low.  Research gears and such on marlin...I have dual cases with 4.7's in one and 2.28 in the other and I can still go 70...like I said, the t-case gears will only be noticed when you put the truck in 4-low (dual case is a little more complicated than only 1 case).

Research the install...but very easy to do.  The gears will come with directions.  I installed mine (with absolutely no experience) 4 years ago and the only thing you will want to make sure is that the t-case housing is clearenced (sp?) enough (Install took me about 4 hours...remember...I had absolutely NO experience back then...and I made sure to degrease almost every part that I took off).

You do not state which engine you have, that makes a difference. With 4:88 gears and 33" tires, you are back to about stock gearing so that makes the gearing in the T-cases stock also. The stock low gear in the t-case is not low enough to crawl without a lot of playing with the clutch.

If you have a V-6, it has a chain drive T-case and there is no way to make your gearing any lower in it. Marlin does make an adapter to put a gear drive T-case in front of the chain drive T-case to give you dual cases. The downside of this is you have to buy two adapters, one to hook the gear drive T-case to your tranny and one to hook the gear drive T-case to the chain drive T-case. In addition, you have to have the D-lines modified, front made longer, rear made shorter.

If it is a four cylinder, most came with a gear drive T-case and you can get lower gears for it. The install is shown on Marlins web page, there is some grinding/milling that has to be done on the inside of the case to get the gears to fit. The plus, no D-shaft mods are needed and you can install another case to have the Marlin Ultimate set-up.

Some four cylinder came with chain drive cases and the best thing to do in that case is to get a gear drive cases and swap it over but I do not know what that entails. I do not know if you have to get an adapter to mate the gear drive case to the tranny.

Go to the product web page and do some reading to help you out for identifying on what you have. All the info is there, you just have to dig a bit.
