starting problem
« on: Oct 15, 2006, 06:22:25 PM »
when i bought my truck it started fine every time then on day it hesitated then started, then it wouldn't start at all. I put a new starter in and a new starter switch in the column (connects to the back of the tumbler) still didn't work. I turn the key and the radio comes on and the lights on the panel but you turn it all the way and it does nothing no click or anything any ideas?

Start checking the fusible links and individual fuses.

Check your relays under the dash. I found on my 80toy...I had the ignition switch go out at the same time the relay did. Mine is located on the driverside kick panel....just behind the a/c vent. I replaced both and that fixed my problem.

Have you checked the battery and charging system.  A battery could have just enough juice to light up the dash and radio, but not enough to crank over the engine, or make a click noise.  While in this condition, can you jump start it?

Sarting to get a little confused here, are you just posting different aspects of the same problem?

the starting problem is my 85 and the holding a charge is my 87 i have two trucks. so there for i have two differant problems sorry for the mix up. i ran a wire from the battery to a push button and a wire from the starter to that same button and i have to turn the key over to start and push that button down to start my truck. so basically i am jump starting the starter every time. and on my 87 they problem is holding a charge.

i got the old push button start too, my buddy said it was the ignition switch that went out and we just left it at that. now i have heard that the ignition switch goes out alot on these trucks, and that when the "start" function goes out the "on/off" function is not far behind. is that true? i have an 84 2wd Xcab 22r.

Ok I see now.

Well, if I understand you correctly, you are running a push button starter to bypass the starter cylonoid (sp?). If thats starting your rig, it sounds like you already have this one figured out. I have done the same on my old Ford when the cylonoid went out, but I did it by arching a screw driver. You should be able to swap the cylonoid from your 87 into your 85 so you have atleast one rig at 100%, I'm pretty sure it's the same part number.

Ah yes, the ol arching it by a screw driver trick.  I did it for years in my old Datsun pickup.      :disturbed:
