Problem starting a 87 Runner (HELP!!!)
« on: Aug 24, 2010, 06:24:27 AM »
I have a 87 runner and in the past few months its been having problem starting up.  All it does is make a clicking sound from the passenger.  I would have to turn the key several times before it would start up.

I installed a new starter recently as well...

Please help Thanks

Sometimes as the ignitions get older this occurs, if this is the case you can put an old style auxillary light relay on it and fix the issue. Just wire the relay as if the ignition switch is the light switch and the other side as if it were the light.

Is the clicking coming from the starter? If it is the contacts Inside the starter solenoid are probibly worn out. They arnt hard to replace and can be purchased at napa.

theres a relay that controls the starter there in that corner. listen carefully and pull it out...its bolted to the wall there with a 10 mm. that sometimes go bad and is a head ache. best fix is too wire up the starter straight  from the key ignition.... never have that problem again!!
built lastnight, crawl today...

The contacts in starters wear out. Get some electrical contact cleaner and clean the connect or the starter also. I hope this helps.

had the same problem with mine, ended up being a bad wire connector that clips on the starter solenoid.  cleaned it up, sprayed some silicon spray and it fixed it.
