Scarboy's slow 1980 Alabama build
« on: Oct 11, 2006, 07:58:25 PM »
Ok folks, what we have here is a 1980 toyota with that I paid $250 for. It came with a broken frame bad wheels and tires a 5 inch body lift and a running 20R engine, oh and the tranny pops out of reverse. I plan to put rears up front and 63" chevys in the back. tune the carb and fix the tranny+ frame, bigger tires and a paint job. There are many more things I want to do just not right now with my limited budget. Since I'm only 16 and I had to get a job to pay for this piece.

Its a start!  Hope you have some tools...keep working!  We are here to help!

Though if you dont have something to pull the bodt with, it might help to keep the body lift on there until you get the frame welded and patched.  More room to work and all.

I agree with CTENG. You got lots of work in front of you, but I have been there (and gave up :smack:, wish I hadn't.) but you can do it.

Hells yeah, when you start with a beat rig, you don't mind just cutting off all the junk to make room for more rubber...you can go simple and clutter free...when in doubt, cut it out.

My frame started to bow like that. It might have broke in two if I kept wheeling it. I used this build as my inspiration, although I took an easier route and built a flat bed exo kinda thing. I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

You gotta put a jack under it where is its bowing...get all your measurements looking good and fishmouth the frame inside and out with some diamond shaped plates.  Weld any cracks before hand.  The cracks will need to be cleaned and ground out a bit to remove and rust before welding.  Then grind the frame smooth again for the braces.

Well Scarboy...congratulations.
You get the award for the nastiest carb anyone has sent me.
This isn't going to be a rebuild, its gonna be a ressurection.
Funny thing is, as bad as it is on the outside, it is fairly clean on the inside.  Let me guess, it ran, but it stumbled and the throttle response was terrible?  Oh yeah...you better believe I have pics!

Scarboy...an FYI.  At some point the top side of your engine took a pretty good hit.  It was enough to shear the main bodies of the carb bout 1/8 inch and bend the main bolts.  I had to drill them all out, hopefully I can find some replacements tomorrow.  You may want to keep that in mind when you are cleaning up your engine.  Watch out for issues that might be residual from whatever blow the carb took.  I don't think it will affect the carb rebuild though, it should all still go back together.
