i dunno, pat.  I would mock it up without felts/rubbers and weld it there just to make sure on clearances. :twocents:

Yota4life

I wouldnt do it, they will just melt or catch on fire. Put the axle under the truck then mock them up and weld them. Then assemble the knuckles.

You can always unbolt the felts and rubber and wrap it with something so it doesn't get burnt or damaged.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

Rockcrawlintoy

i would keep the knuckles off. i have dropped some coin on this project and it would suck to get everything together then rock it around the block only to find a fagged off seal

I think im just gonna put the front end in whole but unpainted and get everything mocked up completely and tacked(perches, gussets, hydro assist) and make sure all the angles are perfect and then pull it back out weld everything up and paint it and put it back for final assembly.  I think that will be my best option because I just want this thing done perfect and that wont be very much more work.  Some work will start today either way

Ramrod

just bought pretty much everything I need to finish the suspension and drivetrain off (hopefully)

very nice.  I love those diamond housings.  Very nice lines.  What have you heard about the clearance issues on the d-shaft.  I just bought a taco for my wife and I plan on someday SASing it with the older topshift cases and keeping it a pass. side drop.

oh and does anyone know where they are getting the knuckle balls for the housings.  I would figure that they are starting to become harder and harder to find.  I'd just machine new ones that were stronger if I were them.

gotrocks

oh yeah and what'd the new inners set you back if you don't mind me asking

Ramrod

I havent really heard of any clearance issues with the axle like this.  Revivalist's truck has the exact same axle but with high pinion and he's doin fine.  the inners are $340 and yeah I asked brian about where they get the balls and its just from old housings they get at the junk yard and copletlely check for straightness.  He said they have junk yards that keep all the housings they get just for them

Ramrod

here is revivalists truck.  I love this thing and have gotten a ton of inspiration and info from looking at it

Hyena

hey, are you gonna start on it this weekend?  i can up and help on sunday and monday but i have to work saturday,  i could actually come up saturday night.  give me a call.

Ramrod

im just waiting for the parts I ordered today and for kevin to finish a miata he's just fixing to sell

Thats cool. That answers my question about cutting the balls then. So I guess it would be possible to cut the balls off an old axle and put them on a 400$ spider9 axle.

ramrod sorry I was meaning the drive shaft hitting the exhuast.  I read somewhere that it can cause an issue but I wasn't sure how much of an issue.

oh and in regards to the balls.  I think I know where they get them.  There is a toyota yard in Denver that I've been to a few times and they have front axles all over the place.  I should've taken a picture because they had a stack probably 8 feet deep and 8 feet tall.  It was crazy how many of them there were.  I was tempted to buy another axle just to have around but they wanted to much for a complete axle.  I did buy a set of spare hubs however for 50 bucks.  Last time I was there though they were out of hubs but had plenty of housings sitting around.

Loki

nice nuts you got there. hope i can find a top shift soon. that axle is pretty nice too. so has it been confirmed that bobby long isn't making custom inners anymore?

if you guys don't work on his rig this weekend. come on down towards vacaville and we can get mine up and going...if not i'll just work on it with lagen :psss:

Looking @ the housing balls, they appear to be pitted. Might be the lighting but I was curious. I've heard Brian is looking around to source out new housing balls. Sux they have to destroy so many housings to build theirs.

the housing balls are painted with hammered finish paint so thats why they look that way.  that for the comments though

hhmmmnn...   im thinking of just putting mine together how it is.  I put the axle in there and the seal goes around it good so its probably fine.

How are the knuckle balls inserted into the tubes? Does he press the entire section of the old toyota axle tube with the ball on it to get it into such a huge tube or it the tube just that thick?

What diameter tubes and thickness did you go with? It looks like beef! 3.5"?
