For the past 2 weeks I keep telling the guy at the gas station across the street that he should raise his prices to $5 a gallon -- thinking that was extreme and would never happen.

So yesterday I told him that's not good enough and he should raise it to $10 a gallon.

Tell me about it.

I commute 115 miles per day at 20mpg, so that's 5.75 gallons per day, at $5 a gallon, that's $28.75 a day just to go to work, or $862.00 a month on gas alone.

Gas Hits Five Dollars a Gallon In California, The End Times Draw Ever More Near
Although AAA of California is reporting some drivers are now paying $4 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, local Cali station KSBW found gas stations in Gorda, south of Big Sur, currently charging $5 per gallon for gas. While that's obviously an isolated occurrence, the average price is getting pretty high up the cost meter. For instance in Salinas, AAA recorded an average of $3.39 per gallon. Santa Cruz is at an average of $3.37 per gallon. Yes, the gas prices in California are always higher than elsewhere in the country, but this is getting ridiculous. Something must be done! Oh, Toyota — please come and save us. If they only could get every individual in the United States to drive a Prius — then all we'd have to worry about is cows farting. Also, we'd be living in a fantasy. (Hat tip to SwatLax!) [via KSBW]

Old Meters Mean Double the Price at the Pump

By KEN BELSON
Published: May 29, 2008
For a brief moment on Wednesday morning, the gas pump at Gary Staiano's Texstar service station in Bellerose, Queens, turned into a time machine. After 11.3 gallons was pumped into a Pontiac Grand Am, the meter read $23, or $2.03 a gallon, a price not seen in more than three years.

Then Mr. Staiano transported his customer back to reality when he doubled the total at the cash register. Using pumps so old that the meters go only as high as $3.99 a gallon, Mr. Staiano began pricing his gas by the half-gallon this week, just as station owners did when gas prices skyrocketed a generation ago.

Yup.  $4.07 to fill the Jetta with premium last week.  4.36 this week.    How can they justify this?       :wall:

Because we continue to pay it. It's that simple. If you have a vehicle part that several people want, you will sell it to the highest bidder, right? They are finding the price that we will continue to pay.

I just don't see how/when we're supposed to STOP paying it?  Know what I mean??  I mean yeah it REALLY sucks but unless we go back to horse and buggy days, what are we supposed to do?  I have 97 4Runner that I owe full value on, and I know nobody is going to give me even close to what I owe on it now so I'm pretty well stuck with it.  I'm kind of afraid of motorcycles, so I don't know what other option I have.  Luckily I only live about 11 miles from work, so it's a lot better situation than poor Kyle.  But seriously...where do we draw the line?  And what do we do then?  Personally my breaking point was about $2.50 per gallon but here I am paying $3.95 because I don't know what else to do.
RIP Kyle, we love and miss you man.  :smooch:

Five Bucks A Gallon?

Gas Expert Says Some Areas Could Soon See Five Bucks A Gallon

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Americans are paying record high gas prices, and an energy expert says that things are very likely going to get much worse in the very near future.
Phil Flynn, with Alaron Trading in Chicago, says crude oil prices are up by 20 percent from the beginning of the year and continue to gain momentum.
He said the oil market is "on fire," and defies common wisdom.
Flynn says that if the current trend continues, gas prices could hit five bucks a gallon in some areas of the U.S.

Ok...adjust for inflation, return the dollar to it's more realistic value in the world market and increase supply. Wait a year. The current price (and future increases), world wide, will drive down demand and thus prices. I'll bet there will be a big turn right after the election also.

Another car to consider:

3 year old Civic GX.  115 miles  30mpg.  3.83 'gallons" a day.  Cost per "gallon" $1.20
Cost per month for fuel: $142.60
Cost of fueling device for your home/garage $2500.(half of that you can get a tax rebate on)
Car: $18K, factory certified.   ~350 a month payment.

First year cost: $5911+$2500(-$1000 rebate)=$7411
Second year cost: $6000( gas at you home is heavily regulated against price hikes compared to gasoline)

I have a relative who has one and he swears by it.  And having a full tank all the time is a bonus.  No trips to the station.

kneedownnate

Why would you buy a car just to get better mileage?  Every time I hear that, or that somebody's going to buy a motorbike because it gets better mileage, I can't help but  :shake:  You're SPENDING MONEY to try and save money?  If you need to purchase a vehicle that's one thing, but if you're buying one to save on gas then you really need to take a deeper look at your logic!

Not only that, but it only gets 30mpg?  My 91 2wd toyota gets 26mpg doing dd and often gets 30 on road trips, even while hauling several hundred pounds of parts or motorcycles!

I'm seriously considering buying a gas hog, a 72 chevy 3/4 ton 2wd, and converting it to diesel so I can burn grease, but it'll be mostly used for hauling purposes so mileage will rarely be an issue anyway.

Well, cause I'll be saving $5000 a year by buying a new car. Logic sounds wierd, but it's fact.
