if you want a chevy regular cab pickup that wheels great and gets really good fuel mileage get an old military m1008. its just a chevy regular cab long bed pickup, automatic 3 speed th400 tranny, 6.2L diesel, and a 14bolt ff rear axle and a dana 60 front axle. its rated as a 1 1/4 ton truck, so your top speed with the stock tires (around a 30") is about 55mph, but with those gears you are already set to go to a 36" tire or bigger, and nothing in that drivetrain is going to break. check out www.dieselplace.com in the 6.2 section, theres a bunch of guys on there with those style trucks that abuse them, no problems whatsoever.

biggest downside to this truck (if you like luxury interior) is that its a bare basics interior. no carpet, radio, or ac. has heater, and putting a radio in it is really easy, and just put rhinoliner on your floorboards at 1/4" thick, will make the interior quieter and keep the cab warmer during the winter. but when it comes to ease of maintainance all you need is a water hose and you can just wash the outside of your truck and the inside at the same time haha.

check on ebay for the m1008, i've seen a few of them on there. also check with your local military surplus place, if they dont have one they can probably find one for you.

very reliable, simple to work on, and cheap to maintain, unlike most other diesels. you can make it powerfull, but for reliable power and improved fuel mileage put a turbo from a 6.5, water/methanol injection (no more than a 50/50 mix of methanol for reliability reasons, marine injectors, larger exhaust, removing the egr setup (if so equipped). if you want to get drastic there is a guy on the dieselpage who has set up a 6.2 with over 550 ft/lbs of torque, not bad for a mechanical injection diesel considering stock torque for that motor is around 300.

if you have time, money, and like major mechanical projects then swapping out the 6.2 for either a cummins 6bt or 4bt would be the best option. the older 6bt, what went in the dodge trucks, was mechanical injection 12 valve. the 4bt was offered in box trucks of many different brands, very easy to get the 4bt up over 500 ft/lbs of torque, and easily get 36+mpg (engine i'm hoping to put in my suburban). easily mates to the sm465 and nv4500, but i'm not certain what auto tranny's would bolt up to it.

TH350

i doubt the th350 would survive the power of that motor though, i know the 700r4 wont, th400/4l80e should survive just fine, and should bolt up, i just fogot about them earlier.

:dunno: but it's a chevy pattern, that's what I was getting at.

red

your right, i'd forgotten that all chevy v6 and v8 motors have the same bolt pattern. but for power reasons i dont think the th350 would survive the cummins engine, but i might be wrong.

agreed on both parts, now your in the same boat i'm in except for i'm in a suburban. how hard to you plan to wheel this truck? do you not care about damage or when your offroading will you take it slower and more in control? you can get by with a gm 10 bolt front axle so long as you dont go above a 36" tire and arent dumb. not the strongest axle, but its alot cheaper than a dana 60, and very, very easy to come by.

what you need to do asap if your new truck is a 1500 is upgrade your rear axle to one from a 2500 or 3500 chevy/gmc. its a 14 bolt, semi-floater for the 2500 and full-floater for the 3500. then you will never have to worry about your rear axle again.
