Tow straps and D-Rings questions
« on: Jul 07, 2006, 12:07:39 PM »
Is it safe practice to connect two two straps (20K or 30K 3 inch wide looped, NO METAL HOOKS) together with a D-Ring to get some extra length?  Would it be safe to winch with those two straps connected?

Just curious  :turtle:

Shouldn't be a problem, just throw a jacket or towel over the d-ring to keep it from becoming a projectile if a strap breakes.  Also don't forget those straps stretch a bit too.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I'd agree, but a broken strap can also do some damage.
Time to go wheelin!

It'll probably work most of the time, but why risk it?  Here's a recent thread from pirate that discusses how to attach two straps together safely.

i read the pirate thing, but am still wondering what is the point of the stick? it appears they said to get the straps apart? i have used the loop through technigue for several things (not tow straps though) and have never had an issue with them not coming back apart

If you jerk somebody hard enough I could see how it would be pretty hard to get the straps apart.

i dont i saw a guy get killed like that, he got in a hurry when helping some one out and hooked to straps togeather with a clevis/ d-ring and one of the straps broke and the d ring whent flying and hit him in the back of the head!!!
with the right safety precausons it can be made pretty safe (throwing a jacket over the d-ring), but why take the chance

Scary stuff...I won't either.  It's probably easier to use a stick anyway!

I ain't stupid. :nope: go ahead and call me a wuss but i like breathing. lemme see if i can find an example picture of these kind of situations haha. ok first is the runner up for darwin award last year had to throw this one in too. now that's a stuck! he might still be out there. someone should really go check  please, don't be a tool. my head thanks u

Hey there, I resemble that comment.

I have seen some pretty scary stuff too and most of the time it was some drunk RN that thought he was hot  :pokinit:

Never use a chain for anything more than a light pull. Get a longer strap if you need a longer strap. they come in 30' too.

If you must use a D ring to connect connect two straps together don't snatch on it, only tug.

If that don't work use a winch and if that don't work use a winch and a second truck to pull on a strap or winch too.

For your sake look at how they got it attached before you pull, it might be your head that is about to come off.

stick is in there so the straps dont sinch down tight on each other, and allows you to get them back apart. On the clevis/shackle question, the rating on the clevis or shackle is going to be  more than a nylon strap BUT if the strap let go, one of the straps is going to have that shackle connected to it with some force behind it and head right back in the direction of the pull, RAPIDLY!!!!  :yikes:. my vote is strap on strap

I've seen smashed up windshields from people trying to pull others out!  I know people that wrap chains around the straps or winch cable.  It stops the broken strap winch line from flying back, it just drops, and the chain acts like an anchor!  50 pounds of chains stops it in a hurry!
