Sorry to here about your jeep.  As far as the police go There really isn't much they can do for you.  This is a civil case and your best option would be court.  make sure you have all the proper paperwork between you guys.  Always document everything.  Which includes lots of photos.  Someone else said it allready but it is a good idea to go down there (take someone with you as a witness) and get lots of photos of how it looks now.  As far as recording conversations I don't know the law wear you are but I cant believe that it is not admissible in court.  Usually as long as one person in the conversation is aware and gives permission to be recorded all is legal.  Its when both sides are not aware and you don't permission from the Court to record that you run into problems.  So if you are recording yourself you should not have a problem.  Did this info come from your lawyer or just someone told you?  As far as the press goes this will probably be the fastest and cheapest way for you to get things done.  Just make sure you tell them everything that went on between you and this shop otherwise the shop will tell them and it might make you look like the ass in the long run.  I am a campus police officer now but was a Municipal police officer for many years before moving to the campus side.  Anyways if you need any advice or help just PM me.  I am happy to help with anything that I can.  Just don't touch him or his property.  It will only cause you problems in the long run.  Although personally I think we should be allowed to    every now and then.

the audio recording can be done with the video if you do that... two birds with one stone type of deal and chances are he wouldnt think about the audio part and you might be able to get him say some stupid and dig his own grave...

Anyways If i took him to a show I would tame him to eye for an eye, that shows funny and this shop would have to pay more than just money, the judge makes them go through something simular to what you have been through.
