What size wheel spacers?
« on: Apr 21, 2006, 02:17:56 PM »
Im sure this has been covered...I did a search and didnt get much.....

Anyway, ive got a 89 rear axle under my 85runner, I measure a 2" difference in width.  My question is am I shooting for exactly the same width in front...1" spacers, ....or do I want to be slightly wider in front?  1.25s or 1.5s?

Im more concerned about on road and high speed off road handling, right now its spooky goin fast in the dirt :yikes:.   So im trying to gauge handling at different widths and also minimizing the extra load on the bearings.   Anyone feel theres a "sweet spot"?

Hope that makes sense......

the axle from the 89 is 3" wider then the 85. So for wheel spacers to make the front even, get 1.5" and your good to go.

yea  it should be 3 inches wider than the original rear axle,  so 1.5 spacers up front

and a solid axle aint gonna handle perfect in corners on gravel

just take your time and get a feel for it

Thats wierd...ive measured a a few times and consistently get 2"... :dunno:   I trust you guys though....

Ive had solid axle rigs since the 80s, and been driving them too fast ever since....:)    I know they are no rally cars, ...gravel or not ....trust me when I say this thing is squirrely.  I couldnt figure it out, ive had many 85s over the years...with simliar setups, been sratching my head over why this one is so unstable around corners.    Then it hit me....:smack:  A wider rear axle is no good....

Thanks guys....I think ill go with the 1.5s.
