Cooling issue...should these be connected to something?
« on: Mar 31, 2006, 07:39:30 AM »
OK, I have been having some over heating issues lately and the other day I noticed I had no coolant in the system.  I refilled the collant and still overheated, so last night I put in a new toyota thermostat, and went to look at the coolant level and she is empty again.  Can't figger out where all the coolant is going to, but I noticed these two grimey hose connector deals on the bottom of the radiator that have no associated hoses.  These supposed to be connected to something, or capped off?

Seriously I've only seen those on aftermarket radiator's, my guess is auto trans cooler line. I had those on a Kragen bought radiator.

If your not leaking coolant you've probably got a blown head gasket

For some reason the aftermarket includes those even if you don't have an auto, to where OEM's don't even have them. I guess it's so they only have to Make 1 radiator for all applications. If your truck is running a little hot so did mine with that Korean radiator. Dump it find a new OEM or an old one recore it and it will run cooler. That POS always ran hot for me so I finally found an old V6 in good shape had it redone. I constantly had to refill mine with that radiator.

If you can't see any visible leaks, this is where I would check.
Happened to me,  couldn't figure out where my antifreeze was going.  So then I'm doing an oil change as part of regular maintenance, and sure enough the milkshake substance followed by a bunch of reglar anti freeze.  I was so confused   :headscratch:

But like Glen said blown head gasket

I'm going to remember that as well.  I have used felpro everywhere but on the head gasket, without any problems yet.  but it's always good to have options.

I got a Miloden (sp?) from Napa. No auto coolant lines and engines doesn't run hot.

Another somewhat common problem is the timing chain wearing through the timing cover into the coolant passage.  Old chains can bust the guides and do this.   Leak down test should help pin point a problem.

those lines are indeed for the auto tranny cooler, noting inside that part except air unless there is a leak (its possible, but never heard of a leak actually starting there) mine just have rubber vacuum plugs on the ends.....

if you are losing coolant, and overheating, its probably head gasket or a manifold or a coolant system issue.....

What does the underside of your oil fill cap look like? Any white goo on it? If so then you've got moisture in your oil system = leaking head gasket.

Have you done a compression check yet?

Bringing this back up...where did you get your set Glen.  Can you order right from the company or does a specific store carry them?

I peeked down from the top after I got the valve cover off and didn't see much in the way of scarring, but I will see when I get to the timing cover...I haven't drained the oil yet so there is still some resting in the head, it doesn't look like milkshake, it just looks scuzzy and dirty, so maybe it isn't the head gasket.  I will inspect more as I pull things apart, maybe I will get lucky.   :dunno:

did you ever check your water pump? make sure its working?   if the HG was blown you would most likely have some milkshake going on.

EDIT :  forgot his antifreeze was dissapearing and not just overheating:)
