Cooling Probs
« on: Jul 12, 2004, 07:44:58 AM »
Ok.....So when I first rebuilt my engine I wasnt aware of the toyota thermostat being different than the parts of fluff t-stat. So when i did find out I replcaed it w/ the yoter one. This one dose the exact same thing, it heats up till the needle is just tuching the red then it opens, it only dose it when the motor is cold. So after that i thought mabe it needed to be flushed, so i bought the littlel duber from prestone and ran it for 15-20min, then 50/50 mix of kitty killa and h20, and a bottle of water wetter. I do have the heater core bypassed cuzz it exploded on me this winter, im juss to lazy to repalce it, and its summer i dont need it, not sure if that has anything to do w/ it. Checked for all the symtoms of a blown headgasket, compression is 160 across the board, no white flakege on the plugs and no kitty killa in the oil. Im gonna try another yoter t-stat, mabe even try no t-stat, a V6 rad. Any help would be much appricaiated.

thats weird because when my waterpump went out, i replaced the hoses and the thermostat as well. the guys at shmucks gave me a 195degree thermo and my needle would go all the way to the top and then drop. so i put the original toyota one back in  and no probs

sounds like lack of bypass.

you can try the toyota 85 4runner t stat.  it is a dual stage thermostat.  she cost me 35 bucks though.

I wouldn't run no stat at all.  That could cause problems too.  A new stat sometimes needs to get run in.  I have installed a few new stats and a few times it opened late on the first fireup, I think thats normal.  The next time after that it worked as advertised.  If it does it more than twice I would think its a bad stat.

What is the factory stat?  210 or something right?

YOu will really have problems on the trail with no stat cause the water will not stop circulating and will not have time to cool down
