97 4 runner shakes while braking
« on: Jan 04, 2006, 05:19:04 PM »
hello every one, i have a 97 4runner with 70,000 on it. about 6 months ago i started to a notice a very bad shake when applying the brake. The steering wheel rattles very hard and the dash looks like its gonna bounce out of the the wind sheld. Sometimes it does not shake at all especially when you first start driveing it for the day i.e. (the first 30 miles) and it seems to shake more under 35mph. I have had my rotors checked and the mechanic said they were good as i thought they were cause the rotor was still smooth and the pads were  fairly new,  but i was still shakeing,  I had the rotors "turned down" hoping that resurfacing the rotors would fix the problem but it only seemed to make it worse.  After spending what seemed like days on the phone and on the web, i have came up with this:  after market and lifetime guarantee pads are much harder than stock toyota pads, causing them to generate more heat, and since the rotors were thinner after being resurfaced they warped even more.  My suggestion is to always use toyota pads.  They cost a little more and they won't last as long (since they're softer) but you won't destroy your rotors and will have a smoother ride.   I have done this mod just recently and will keep you posted.

lc engineering has the slotted and drilled for about the same price as a lot of the pain rotors...not sure if they really make any difference or not

cheap pads = soft compound = better stoping and less wear on rotors and  :twocents: in pocket
