Shakes and rattles
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:51:10 AM »
Hey guys...need some help with this.  When i am driving my 87 4runner  i get a rattle coming from what sounds like under the cases...but it only happens when the drivetrain isn't under load...like cruising in gear or coasting in neutral...when i'm on the gass is stops.  Other problem is i sometimes get a pretty good shaking of the frontend...almost like the wheels are figting each other.  Can watch the steering wheel saw back and forth.  I have checked all the front steering and suspension components(sas, chevy springs, crossover steering)  and they are all tight...seems more severe than an alignment or tire balance issue...any ideas?

Have you recently change the rear suspension?

have you done gears and/or lockers lately?  up front, if you have auto locking hubs and a locker in the diff, even in 2wd, the locker will spin the front driveshaft.  if you've done gears, make sure your backlash, heel-toe position, and face-flank positions are all set correctly.

this seems to be the same problem i have. My shake/rattle almost a grinding happens at 45 mph+/ sawing of steering wheel. I however thought it was a tranny prob. So our problem can be from the front? I'm on about 300 miles with 5.29's and front lockrite, but doesnt everything stay still if your manual hubs are unlocked/2wd? Mine only happens when i let off the gas/nuetral as well. rear joints were just replaced.

the rattle only happens when i let off the gas...seperate thing from the shaking.  It sounds almost like a roulette wheel and comes from under the passenger side, sounds like right under where the seat is.

My heatshield on the exhaust used to rattle when I would let off the gas.  :dunno:

SACD_Runner:  your problem is not what i was referring to because you have manual locking hubs; it only happens on the auto locking hubs, which toyrunner87 shouldn't have, i was just throwing it out there.

toyrunner87:  the only thing under the passanger seat that i can think of is the transfer case / front driveshaft.  maybe that driveshaft's out of whack (even though your front shaft shouldn't be spinning)?  the only other things i can think of are your steering and the locker with auto locking hubs (if you have them) that i mentioned earlier.  your symptom is right on for the locker and auto locking hubs.  make sure your hubs are good and not locked up on you.

SACD_Runner:  a couple of other things (sorry i got distracted with the other stuff)
yes everything in the front stays still when your hubs are unlocked.
my truck actually does the same thing when i let off the gas (and mostly in 4th and 5th gear), but it is just a grinding/growling noise, no shakes.  mine is definately the tranny (which is the stocker and has over 350k miles on it) but it doesn't give me any other problems besides the noise.  so yours may be the same thing.
did you just do the gears in the rear too?  if so, then your problem might be that the gears are not installed properly.  make sure your backlash, heel-toe position, and face-flank positions are all set correctly.  i don't know the specs off hand, but i'm sure you can find them in a manual or something.  it sounds like yours is the tranny though, just like me.
toyrunner87's problem might be the tranny too!  but the reason i strayed from that (for both of you) is because mine doesn't cause the steering wheel to saw, or effect anything else, just produces noise.

I appreciate that info, i have a feeling the noise is my tranny which is like you said 4th and 5th ( but the funny thing is that it happens when clutch is depressed too..) but the sawing of the wheel im pretty sure is an out of balance wheel, weekend b4 last the rock garden played havok on me. The gears have been checked twice. the first time the pinion was set a little too deep but nothing to worry about so we pulled it all apart and pulled a shim so im almost positive its fine.

My only  worry was all of this began right after I had new brakes/calipers/pads/filled up birf housings. so i just want to make sure these noises couldnt be under my warranty. :)

Just a thought, what is your caster set at? This might be a good place to start for frontend shaking.

caster angle may need to turn the knuckles ,rattle may want to  check your transfercase e brake.

Front end was a combo of alignment and tire balance...is all good.  I'll have to check out the ebrake...getting a lot of people telling me it could be that.  I hope so...case i don't want to have to open anything up.  I was kinda thinking it was my clutch.  because it only happens when i'm off the power.

a pilot/throw-out bearing is no more the 20$ and 2-3 hours of work to drop the tranny, pop the bearings, install new ones, re-align clutch, and button her back up.

Question is if it is the throwout bearing going would it affect how the cltch performs...because it doesnt feel any different?

Nope, it would work the same, when you let out the clutch you will hear a grinding noise, push it in and it should go away. If its a pilot it would be there at opposite times.

I put a marlin 5" kit in my 4runner and stared to get a rattle noise when I was coasting above 55mph.I could swear it was coming from my transfer case, turns out when I put a CV joint on my shaft it fixed the noise and the slight vibration I had.

thats exactly what im in the process of doing. since i went to 5.29's the added rototing speed and bad pinion angle is trying to blow my output bearing, but with a cv joint all should be a-ok. I wish i would have known this about 500$ of trying to fix ago.

ok...i can end the suspense...figured out what the problem was...and i am extremely relieved.  My catalytic converter is shot...thats what is rattling...i had gone under and shook the exhaust and nothing happened...tonight i got under and ust hit the cat and there was the sounds...way cheaper than a pilot bearing...sweet
