The shakes
« on: Mar 19, 2011, 08:59:51 PM »
OK here's my issue, some really bad shakes around 35mph and 70mph.   About 2 months ago i blew the rear driveshaft off my truck at 80mph, the rear cv joint failed in a violent way.  Shut the motor killed the light etc.  So i replaced the driveshaft that had a small dent in it.  I knew it would vibrate some but it was only a band aid since i was lifting my truck soon and not sure if the driveshaft needed to be lengthed.  Ok truck was lifted 2-3 inches in the front using spring only, stock shackles stock steering etc, the only thing i did was replace spring ans bushings.   Last week i took the driveshaft to the shop and had them make me a new one.  Installed the new driveshaft and when doing so i noticed that my Marling HD transfercase mount was loose, the tranny and TC would move side to side. Got the bolts tight notices 2or 4 stipped and drove home.  Still had a bad shake though   Got home took the driveshaft off and fixed the loose mount.  While installing it i noticed that the TC flange was loose, and i started leaking oil from the rear of the TC.  New marlin seal on its way.  The flange can move up and down and side to side.  Is that normal?   is there a way something in the rear end could be bent, that flange does not move side to side or up and down. Or when i lifted the truck my alignment is now off,  not sure how since i only changed the springs but not sure if maybe i messed the caster up or the toe in.

Any help would be apprieciated, i use this as my daily driver.

So when exactly did the bad shaking start? Also how much movement are you talking about in your flange?   There shouldn't be any movement.  The flange still moves side to side after you tightened it back down? With your driveshaft having a dent in it and your transfercase being able to move side to side I'm thinking your rear main shaft bearing went bad on your transfer case.  But that's with me not actually looking at the truck.  I would start checking things from the easiest to the hardest.  I would check that all your suspension bolts are correctly torqued, i.e. u-bolts and shackles.  Also, make sure the new drivshaft is in series.  Meaning make sure the caps on the u joints are in line.  There is a good write up of going through transfer cases on marlins website. http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/guide/4701-gear-install

I haven't had a chance to tighten the rear flange back down just yet, needing to replace the rear seal before i do that. i will go back through the bolts an check those out.

There should be very little movement in the rear shaft.

When you lifted it did you correct the pinion angle?

Is your D-shaft "in phase"?

Just checked driveshaft is in phase.    I only lifted the front, do i need to correct the pinion angle is so how do i do that.  with the driveshaft bolted up i feel no movement but then again my tranny is enganged and my truck is on a hill, so i will move it to flat ground and take it out of gear to see if there is still any movement.

ok just went outside and took the truck out of gear, the driveshaft is still moving at the transfercase.  I tighten that and go from there, if anyone has any ideas or wants any pics to see if it's something else let me know

the output shaft in you TC should NOT move. If it does then you might want to think about checking your output bearing. Pictures would help a lot!

I think a rebuild of your t case is in order.

i just went and got the 30mm socket to tighten the nut so hopefully that will help if not i will replace the seal and rear bearing and go from there,  the t-case still shift fine and tight, no grinding of any sorts so i doubt a complete rebuild is needed but then again you never know what i might find when i take the rear cover off.

I would check the rear shaft in the t-case for run out, it could be bent.

pulled the rear flange off and man was it loose, checked the shaft and it seemed fine, nothing wrong there no play or anything in the shaf.  Pulled the seal but noticed that i got the wrong seal from marlin and there sending me a new one.

Also while i was at it i went ahead and checked all the bolts on the front end, i noticed that the u bolts were only torqued to 20ftlbs and the book says 70-110 so i was a little off there.  so tighnted that andhopefully that will fix my issue.

Does anyone know where i can get another transfercase flange nut?

if your driveshaft "violently" came un done then i'd be willing to bet your output shaft or pinion is bent.  depending on what end busted the u joint.

btw, a bad u joint would shake the entire dang truck BAD.  its not easy to miss the fact something is bad wrong.

the u joint at the rear is what came apart violently, i drove the truck since then and noticed nothing wrong feeling till  recently when i noticed the tc flange loose.

Update,  got the rear TC seal changed, got a new flange bolt and got it torqued to 80ft lbs.  That took the movement out of the drivetrain.  Also torqued the front u bolts to proper specs and filled up the TC.  She drove just fine no more shake from the rear, but i do have some from the front but that cause i need to get my tires balanced and maybe an alignment.  Getting my new tires put on tommorrow so we'll see what the new tires and balance do for me.
