Help me out!

I am thinking the more  quiet and reliable Honda might be a good choice, but for mulching in wet/damp Washington hp is also important.

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I voted Honda, unless it's the GL motor. the GX is the good one. B&S  is better than the GL.  :twocents:

I've been using nothing but B&S for 15 years, and I even learned how to rebuild them from my Grandpa.  Super easy!  I've never had problems starting a B&S on the first pull, unless you have to much compression!  :smack:   That was the last time I work on the head while drinking!  If you can get a pusher with a rear big wheel!  I love mine!  Tall grass no problem!

Honda is by far the more reliable motor. and the 1.5 hp diff will only make a difference if you are constantly mowing thick or heavy surfaces

John Deere

Not sure what they have now, but I bought one about 14 yrs ago and it had a Kawasaki motor with a OHV and pressurized lubirication system. 6hp, I think. I sold it to a co-worker this spring. Haven't done anything to it other than change the oil and spark plug, clean the air filter and sharpen the blade. The thing still runs like new and starts on the first pull. Very quiet and almost no vibration.

It looks to be the Honda GCV 160

http://www.honda-engines.com/gcv160.htm

The two mowers are:

(1) Craftsman Honda Mfr. model #38888

(2) Craftsman B&S Mfr. model #38885

Hopefully the link/site below shows the comparison.

Don't they make side discharge anymore? :dunno:   I never liked a rear bagger.  I keep kicking the bag.  Sidedischarge is the only way to go, don't have to stop and empty the bag every five minutes!  Makes for a long day when you mow a half acre with a pusher!  I can do it in 45 minutes without bagging, 2 hours if I bag!  Bagging = less

Most of the rear baggers are set up to mulch and have attachments available for a discharge shoot.

I own a landscape maintenance company and in my experience honda engines have lasted me longer.

but both are residental design engine with expected use of 2-5 hours weekly vs commerical mower which runs 40 hours weekly

although, price difference 200-400residental and 800-1000commerical

also, if you plan to mulch with it then there is extra resistance and more wear and tear

plan and simple....
you get what you pay for

ding ding ding! we have a winner!

I work for a Junior collage, and have taken care of the ground equip. for 21 years.
This is the Truth, the mowers we buy run1K-1.3K and there worth every $ of it.

If you want to buy one mower to last the rest of your life, get a toro or an exmark 21" walk behind.

it will run ya 1.3K and will be the last mower you ever buy if you change the oil and lube it at the right times.

Did Toro ever do away with the aluminum decks?  That was the worst part of a Toro, best part was a B&S motor!

you must be joking. the deck is the best part, no rust. takes a lot longer for it to oxidz (sp?) than to rust.

the one's at work have kowey motors on them. the old ones are 2cly, the newer ones are 4cly. (for caliy)
