1.  Yes I have driven it on the street, infact, as of today i have 533 miles on it already, I have driven it on the freeway, and got up to 80mph, at about 75mph I get a little death wobble, and it just gets worse after that.  At those speeds with my gearing my motor is turning about4500rpms which is to high to cruise at anyway so i am not concerned, also I don't have shocks which do help a little with death wobble.

2.   No shim in the front, I put a lot of time into setting up the front so I would not have to use a shim to set the angle, my angle right now at ride height is 0* same as transfercase flange.

3.   Front shackles are 6".  The mount under the frame puts the center of the shackle bolt 1" under the frame.

4.   From the bottom of the frame to the center of the bottom bolt of the front shackle it is 5".

5.   I will have to take a pic for you if you cant find one that works in my build, but you'll have to wait.

No problem for the questions, i don't have a problem with my shackles at that angle.  Many people wonder why I have them set like that, and say they will hit the frame, but guess what, they don't so F... um.  I you have a lot of upward travel you may hit but that is why I mounted the shackle under the frame instead of through it.  I wanted to keep it as low as possible, because i have problem with keeping my wheels on the ground, I have already had a few close calls, but nothing major.  They were just because of being carless.

Some other notes:

My crossmember does not absorb nearly as much viration as the stocker, i love it, its like a ridgid chopper vibrating through your teath.

And I also got a ticket today

Alltering my front lisence plate mount $194

He did not like my gas tank were it was mounted so he wrote me for->
Defective/unsafe fuel system or gas  $101

He also said that my tires are not allowed to stick out more than 6" but he did not have a mesuring tape so he was judging by sight that they were illegal.

No splash gaurds/fenders $101

I dont care much for law enforcment but I do respect them and am polite to them when they are polite to me.  This guy must of put his tampon in the wrong hole because he a was an ass.

I will be fixing everything and taking it to court to hopfully get it all dropped.

Ramrod

sweet dude thanks for those measurements.  How close to hitting the frame do your shackles get when flexing? and how far streched do they get the other way?  I know how you feel on the cops I hate those fawkers but am nice.  at one point last semester I was getting pulled over minimum 3 times a week and there all bitches just keep that ticket with you and flash it immediatly when you get pulled  over again and you will get away much easier

86 4runner

i got pulled over and got a ticket for front plate, exhaust exiting in front of the passenger compartment (under the rear seats) mud flaps and cracked windshield. he made note of my tires and bumper hight but didnt have a tape so he didnt rigth me up. he was a real richard. fixed it all ant went to court and the judge was hesitant to even reduce it.

like ramrod i was getting pulled over at least 3 times a week most of the time daily. i rarely got tickets, its like they were just checking on me. i dont drive bad but they always seemed to target me. i would get pulled over for speeding when i dont even speed because i have my daughter in the car. thats another thing, when i slapped the baby on board sign in the back window the cops seemed to not pay as much attention to me. still got pulled over at least once a week. ive been driving my astro van for a few months since ive been sas-ing my runner and have not been pulled over once and my driving habits havent changed.

anyways sorry for venting its always been a sore subject for me since ive payed a couple grand in lawyer bills for hella bogus traffic tickets

hope you get it cleared. truck looks awesome, when mines done here pretty soon we should go wheeling   :beerchug:

Sorry I did not get any pics last night, but I know that when I back onto my dirt bike ramp and flex the front, the shackles are about 3" from the bottom of the frame and when the other side is drooped its about 4-5* before straight up & down, I think if I got some johnny joints or orbit eyes whatever you call them, I could get a lot more flex from the front and possibly utilize the complete amount of droop my front shackles would allow. :dunno:

Dang, lotsa tickets.  Where do you live anyway.  Here in KS they don't write tickets for things like that.  Heck I can take a tube frame buggy down the highway, just has to have a tag.  As long as they got their tax money is all they care about.

I am using the same spring setup as you are.  I am mounting my F150s with the long side towards the front to cut down on departure angle though.

Looks good!

I live in Washington, full of Yuppie's and foreigners,  I was down town when I got pulled over, I dont have too much trouble outside city limits.

I put a clutch in my truck last night, and christ almighty it made a huge difference.  But I had a problem, when I went for a test drive I forgot to hang some wires back up and wrapped my harness up in my driveline and had to re-wire my :pokinit: in the middle of my drive way at 1:00am  :smack:

I bought some 1.50x.120 wall tubeing to make shock hoops.  I had bought the Ford towers but they look stupid and are not going to be tall enough for my shocks.  I have a buddy who owns a "Muff" shop and he is going to help bend them.  Pics this afternoon

good choice on not going the cheap route by useing the ford towers. theres nothing better than a clean looking truck. what shocks are you useing

It's too bad I went the cheap route on my gears, I think
i just broke off a few teeth on my ring gear.

So I was cruising along and "Boom"... and then clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk.
I pulled over to see if i broke my drive line bolts, but every thing is tight, so I got back on the road and drove slowly hanging out of my truck and sure enough it is comming from the rear.

So I drove in a circle forward and reverse and my rear is still locked (welded) and there is no slop, so I don't think it is my spider gears.  Kind of narrows it down, so I am going to pull the third member out after the weekend because I will be gone.

I also made some shock hoops but have had no camera to prove it, please be patient gap:

What the heck were you doing? :slap: What gears were you running? Who set em up? Don't tell me you've got Genuine Gears...

Just think, now your teeth match! :gap: :haha:

But seriously, that sucks. How much is it gonna cost ya?

No, not a U-joint already checked that out, and yes I bought Genuine, I know i should not of bought them but the price was right, and I was broke.  I had a guy set them up that is retired, but rebuilt transmissions and axles his whole life, he has done many of my friends gears, but none of them were Toy axles, but I don't think that would make a difference.

I was sceptical on going this route and told myself that if I have problems i am not going to screw around.  My next pay check is going to go to a set of Hardened Yukon gears from Bobby Long and I will have a shop install them with at least a one year warranty.  Does Bobby Long install gears as well.  An I might have to buy a locker because a shop may not warranty a welded rear?  :dunno:

synwars

A feller by the name of ZUK on PBB has a web site on Toy gear installs. All he installs is Toyota gears. It's good reference material.

http://www.gearinstalls.com/

Although there are basic principles that covers all gear installs, each installation is different per differential type in its idiosyncrasies.

I'm not sure why everyone is going after all the fancy hardened stuff. Gears are already hardened. If the spanners are tightened up as much as possible and the gears are set up properly with a solid collar, there should be next to 0* deflection, thus resulting in a long lifetime.

If a shop doesn't warrenty it because of a spool, I wouldn't use them. Take it somewhere else.

Dang man. I hate to hear that. What gear ratio did you get again?

my opinion = gears are gears.  with that being said my favorite is gonna be the one that has a lifetime no questions asked warranty which = genuine gear and is what i'm running and have been with out problems.  I did blow one set in the rear after running it for 11,000 miles with a 1/4" of side to side play in the carrier bearings and just as much backlash but even that set lasted 1,000 miles at least after cracking it at the highlakes and then they got replaced for free

That frame looks familiar. My truck also has the optional long travel drivers side front spring mount

:headscratch:  I am not following you, what is so optional about my front spring mount?

Rob_O

I was talking about the old frame, with the "long travel" mount (that would mean it's no longer connected to the frame, like mine is)

whiteman

Oh!  I get it.

I have some new up dates for all of you.  I got my front shock hoops mounted and shocks in.  I have not got any shocks in the rear, I cant make up my mind on what I want to do for the rear as far as mounting the shocks.  Shocks hoops, some cheasy tabs, not sure.  I have not even pulled aprt my third to see what really happened.

I just got another truck, I picked up an 86' Ford F-350, 4X4, 460BB, C6 Auto, NP205, D60, Ford 10.5".  I am going to make this thing a tow rig, it has some wiring issues and needs a little TLC, but nothing major.  I have been thinking about dove tailing the toy but I am not sure.  I will have an answer in a few weeks, but because of finals and graduation I have been real busy.  I will try and get some pics and updates soon.

whiteman

Some pics, nothing new but my rusty shock hoops.  I am going to try and pull the rear end out his weekend, I Gradgumacated so now I am out of school I can put more time and money into this beast.  Pics of the new tow rig in the "Tow rig" thread.

Passenger side shock hoop.

Sittin purdy.

Its been somtime people since I have posted but, there really has not been much progression  towards my truck.  My gears are still in exploded, and in the mean time all I have been able to do is break a drive shaft, and make my clutch master cylinder leak.  This thing is fallin apart before it is even done.  Anyway here are som pics of the drive shaft.  I also have a few other problems i will post some pics of, like how I reverse arched my F-150 rears  :gap:.  Yea I have been sticking the hammer to her.

  Back at it again, I got of my loaf and started working on me truck.

Pulled the third and this is what I found, The guy who set my gears up did not make a mistake on setting up my gears, nore did my Genuine gears fail.  It was the welds that were applyed to the spider gears that just were not strong enough.  I had large metal chunks which you can see in the picture, break loose and lodge between the gears whiched caused the to... well you get the idea.

whiteman

Some more carnage also occurred when I broke my driveshaft.
These sweet F-150's are axle wrap queens,  I can not believe how bad this spring wrapped up and bent.

I certainly hope my marlins don't do this :crossed:, I am almost tempted to set up an axle wrap bar directly above the drive line from the top of the housing to a x-member using some heims and heavy tubing.  Any thoughts?

whiteman

To remedy all this carnage I spent some  :bling: and this is what I ended up with.

A set of 4" marlin rear springs, one complete drop-in third member set up with a detroit locker and 5.29's, and a long spline drive shaft kit for the front.

whiteman

With my new marlin springs in place I have some new modifying to do.
As you can see the shackle mounts are going to need to be moved back about an inch for a proper shackle angle, and I am going to go from a 6" eye-eye shackle to a 5" or maybe 41/2" shackle.

I am not to excited with running my rig this tall but I expect it to settle at least 1-2"s.
I may look into setting up the front of spring french styled and running the shackle mounting point throught the frame but it all depends on how much the springs settle and how my pinion angle settles out.  I also need to get a stock length drive shaft rather than my drive shaft that was shortend 3" for the F-150's.  I also am thinking about buying the all-pro bed cage and adding my own twist.  I really want the look of a bed but the strength and durabiliy of the tube bed.  My thought was to set up the bed cage and make bed sides that are removable for heavy trail use, but also are hinged in the front and pinned in the back so I could have a regular width bed and then pinch it down toa dove tail with two pins.  I dont know I am just wanting to get it running again.

yotadork83

damn i think i am going to go with the same marlins insted of the f150's. good luck on the build.
