Well your sapose to have your finders go out to the end of the tread on your tires, but if you run big mud flaps the cops are normally ok with it. I'm just put a Dana 60 and 14 bolt under my 83 toy, got them out of a 1978 K30 chevy truck.

Woa BIGMAN I see that you are from MT.  Aren't the laws there really leaniant.  i am in WA myself and have put full width 10bolts from a blazer.  going to try and run the mudflap thing but dont really think it will work.  The next choice is to put rubber garden stipping to the inside edge of the funder so it will look like a Jeep flat fender because i have an 86 4runner and the fender have a square opening.  my look hoky but judge mite let it pass and it is easy to reomve when on trail.  Also less expensive then bushwakers that break easy.

3/4 and 1 ton trucks should have 4.10 or 4.11 gears.  I had a 78 3/4 ton chevy and it had 4.10's.
:headscratch:  I think I got the 4.11 Idea from my toyota but I am not positive.

4.11 is a toyota ratio.

i think the ratio depends on what engine the truck was running

Depending on if you wanna go 1 ton or 3/4 ton.Either way, you'll need to go Chevy.I would look for a military K30-Dana 60 front,14bolt rear,4:56 f/r and a Detroit in the rear...If you wanna keep it 6 lug,you can go with a chevy 1/2 ton 44 front and a semi-floater 14 bolt or a 12 bolt rear. The type of wheelin' you'll be doing should determine your choice in axles.

On street legalness, usually states will tell ya you're okay if the tire is no more than 2" outside the fender. Anything more, run a mud flap and if ya get a fix it ticket, rig something up to cover the tires and gt the ticket signed off.

For axles, it all depends on budget and where you see the truck going. If you think you will never want a tire taller than say 38", then you can run a 44/10 bolt up front and a 9 inch/12 bolt in the rear. If you will want to go bigger or will want more motor eventually, then look @ a 60 front and a 60/70/14 bolt for the rear

If you stay with a pass drop t-case, the front axles will be Dodge/GM specific. 44s and 60s can be found in both and the 10/12 bolts are GM specific. For the rear, the 9 inch is from Ford, the 14 bolt from GM, and the 60s and 70s could be found in either Ford, GM,or Dodge.

I say go and find a military k30 and get the axles out of it.  I bought my set for $1100 and like it was said earlier, they have 4.56 gears and a detroit rear, mine 60 even has a limited slip (but I have an ARB I'm using though).  It'll be wide but I'm going to see if I can some way make it legal for the street.  Good luck with you decision, and let us know what you decide to do.
