I had a Downey on my 88 22re and didn't see ANY gain at all... realistically your only gonna gain about 5 hp with a header so its not gonna be anything easly noticable.

Summit carries a doug thorley for $189.  Im running one and Ive been very pleased with it.  Its a tri-Y design and I did notice a bit of a difference in midrange power.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

RustyToy

Did it come with a flange or did you have to weld it on?
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

I take that last comment back (somewhat)

I had a LC Engineering header on my 22R and it did have a noticable difference but thats carb'd not efi

i think the design is better on the doug thorley header. but overall quality i like my lc header more. everytime i have been in a toyota with a header its noticable to one without. just dont buy a pacesetter and you should be happy

Yeah, Doug Thorley, man.  And it has a flange.

musclesliver

summit has like five all around the same, any idea which one is the best for me
smog doesn't matter, have an 84 pu with EFI

WHITE_TRASH

Stay the flop away from paceseter!!!  They are total garbage trust me on that. ;)

I didnt buy my Doug Thorley new so I couldnt say for sure if it was flanged or not.  I do like the uni-ball type collector on LC, NWOR and I think Downey.  That is a trick setup.

Get a NWOR (North West Off-Road) header..  they are spendy but worth the money.. it will probably outlast the motor! They are chrome, 1/2" thick flange, ball joint connection for no leaks..  overall probably the best Toyota header I has seen

yotabj

Thanks guys for the info..before i posted this thread I looking at a pacesetter

I had an LC on my EFI 88. It was noticable for sure on the bottom end. I'd buy again!

Does the thorly from summit have a CARB EO number? I live in Commufornia so I have to worry bout that crap.

I must be losing it, I coulda swore I wrote a response to this thread.  I currently have a junk yard 4 into 1, and the only difference I saw was it breathes better at a higher rpm.  I have a NWOR header in storage that I will run whenever I build another engine, plan on running stainless from header to the tail end at that time too.  No cat, neat little sticker under hood says NON CATYLIST, so it's just 2.5" from collector to the tip.  I had a Downey header on a parts truck and it was pretty nice, but the NWOR header is the most well built one I've had in my hands and it has that thick flange too.

All I can say is avoid Pacesetter like it was a bad habit.

And Second, Before you can even buy a header, you should ask yourself what difference in your power band do you want?
If you are seeking just a pure all out power increase, then seek a short 4-1 header.
If you are seeking a more broad power band with a solid low to mid range increase, then seek a longer try-y (4-2-1) header.

they are asshats too but, they have a decent product and they have the :pokinit: in stock, which is more than i can say for the rest.i never have gotten the wrong part from them either.i just don't like dealing with patels when i call.LC sent me the wrong collector pipe.i'd get the thorley from summit racing

kneedownnate

Ditto on what BigMike said, like I said my 4 into 1 likes to breath up high, and the NWOR in storage is a tri-y so it should be a better 4by header.  And definately back it up with the same size exhaust all the way back as what the collector is, not forgetting the cat either.

I got the NWOR one and I loved it.  Pricey yes but a noticeable power increase to my tired engine.  I'm running 2.5 exhaust all the way back and it sounds pretty sweet too.  Besides the bad rep that NWOR has about customer service I got mine the same week.  I live in washington though I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

justin83

i got a hooker header from summit and it make a noticiable increasa in bottom end
