What Tire Size Are You Running on Toy Diff's?
« on: Sep 05, 2005, 07:01:51 PM »
Is there people out there running 40" tires on stock toy diffs?
If there are, are you rockcrawling with them or is it more of a pavement pounder/part-time off-roader?
How about those chromoly's? Are they really compareable to a Dana 60 in strength?
How big of a tire would you run?

I run 40s on my little Toyota differential. I am a pavement pounder though. I hear good reports with well built Toyota axles and 40s though. Chrome won't get you home, but chromoly helps. Atleast that is what I hear these days.

33x11.50's at the moment with stock R&P, but a 5 speed trans instead of the 4. I am thinking about going bigger in the future. I don't have lockers just limited-slips so I don't bust-a-birf.

37's, stock axles, treated longfields.  Had the 37's for about a month and a half.  Broke an inner axle shaft which took out the detriot.  birfs were fine.  3 trips later i grenaded a treated longfield.  I am ordering 30 spline cromo birfs and inners tomarrow.  I really don't feel like pulling my axle apart anymore this year.  Its been apart about 6 times in the last 4 months.  My rear axle is good.  Toyota rear axles are comparable in strength to a stock dana 60.  You gotta be doing something wrong to break a rear axle.

:yikes: 42's on stock birfs? I would have thought that they would scream for mercy just driving around the parking lot. I hope he has his chromo longs packed next time he goes out.

Thanks for the input everyone, I am in the midst of installing a 5.0L ford with fuel injection, AOD auto trans, and dual cases. I have a set of 1 ton axles, but would rather stick with the toys, if I can beef them up enough to handle the power and 38-40" tires.

If you have the 1 tons...and a V8, duals and plan on 40" tires....do it. I personally wouldn't waste the money on the front Toy axle with that combo....you could keep the rear yota axle though and run the 60 up front. Pretty beefy combo with chromo rear shafts I doubt you'll have a problem.

My rig just rolled out of the shop last night..so no wheelin' yet. D44 front, stock toy rear with 5.29's, ARB's, duals and 37's.

so if you were building up a truck you wouldn't put longs in the rear because it is a waste of money. just wondering, I need to know this stuff when I start my buildup

Couple of questions for ya: Why'd you put a 5.0 in a Toy? because you wanted more power. Why do you want to run 40s? Because you want to take on harder obstacles. Why start building a solid truck and not be able to take full advantage of the new mods because your Toy axle wants to snap when you want to put your foot down. If you have 1 ton axles, I'd put them in. You will have more fun with your truck. Yeah you can make Toy axles pretty stout but why when you already have the most expensive part of a 1 ton conversion.Put the cash you would have put in the Toy axles, and run the 1 tons.

I love yota stuff, but a 5oh and 40's!!!! Put in the 1 ton stuff and forget about it. There's no way you're going to be able to keep yourself from spankin the giggle peddle every once in awhile with that v8 under the hood and when you do, you're gonna be gettin greasy pullin apart that poor abused toyota running gear.

everyone i see on the trail tells me im crazy for running 37's on stock birfs.. havn't had a problem yet

usually you break a shaft when you've got your tire turned and it pops. Got on it hard with my rig a few times and have had no problems thus far  :crossed:  :crossed:  :crossed:

duals, lockers, 5.29's, 37" MTRS  (lighter then swampers)

I've been running 35's for a 2 years now with 5.29's, duals, and full spools front and rear.  Stripped out the splines on a hub and busted (sheared......love that word) a pinion gear.  Never had any problems with the stock birfsand stock axles.....  But I try hard to keep a light right foot. But lately...twice this year....I keep shearing off all the bolts on the t-case end of the rear driveshaft. :dunno:   kinda sucks... but easier than changing a u joint.
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

There wasn't even  loud pop when i broke my treated long.  It just starting popping mostly when i would turn.  Then the popping got louder so i unocked the hub and drove out.  Took it apart at home and found it in 12 pieces.

I didn't even hear mine pop when it did. Maybe too much ambient noise from others things? It was totally demolished. I found it in too many pieces to count.

yeah but they came in the diffs with the tires and rims for $500 (the part 85 truck that is) so run them till I break them, heard they aren't that bad though

I have heard of 5.29s breaking to, but most of what I have heard has to do with the quality of setup, if they aren't set up good they will brake

I will probablely go to those eventually but the price right now can't be beat
