I have heard of 5.29s breaking to, but most of what I have heard has to do with the quality of setup, if they aren't set up good they will brake

I will probablely go to those eventually but the price right now can't be beat

Hey, I'd ride them out too. I concur with you on that though. If they are built right, they are sure to break. Driving style is involved too, but I am sure you aren't the one to be horseplaying....lol. aka MUSCLEsilver

well with a completely stock 22re not to many ponies there, we shall see how long they last, maybe I'll build up two 5.29 diffs for trail spares

Sounds like a plan. I would like to build my own differentials. What tools are involved and is it that difficult to do? I have a friend that is a Toyota mechanic that built mine, but I would like to learn. Any help would be great. Thanks.

If i went with new diffs again i would have to go with cryo'd 4.88's.  A lot stronger then 5.29's and still have good gearing.

6.72:1

But Hyena, I need absolute lowness in gearing!

If it was a street driven truck then ya, 5.29s would be grand.  but when you start breaking :pokinit: out on the trail it is another story.  I would rather have strength then the added 20:1 or so crawl ratio.

To The Floor

I have cryo'd Yukon 5.29's aussie front and welded rear, but i haven't driven the truck yet
in the projects nooga, anything goes

Northern Runner

"to the floor", what tire size are you running though?

(especially when I first built it and thought the skinny pedal would make it climb anything.

Friend is running 35" toyo's, 1 box with 4.0, locked front & rear.  Has broken 5 birfs in about as many months.   He believes the low gears and locked front are making quick junk of stock birfs.   Has broken 2 in dirt (the *v's* @ hollister) and 3 on rocks.

Also on his last break, the detroit was up front.  Toasted the left side of the locker when the birf let go.   Has not broken any axles yet.

He's got some marfields now and lincoln locked both ends.  He's gonna see what breaks this weekend.

As for me.  The stock axles seem to hold up really really well to stock gearing and 33"s.

OK, I will give you some input.  I am brand new to these forums ... GOOD STUFF HERE! :yesnod:

I have an 88 S-10 Blazer with a 350-350 tranny and 205 case.  It weighs in at about 4,700 lbs.  I have Toy axles and LOVE them!  On year 2 I broke a L & R Berfield (almost at the exact same time) and then immediately put in Long's 30 spline super set. It has a lock right,  I have NEVER broke anything on the F-end since.  The rear is an 88 (Lincoln locker) and in 4 yrs of wheeling this thing hard on 36 inch TSL's I have only ripped the carrier apart, only because I was to cheap to buy a spool.  If I had done that, I am 100% sure I would have never broke anything in the rear.

In addition to this, I have done just about everything you can think of to abuse these axles!  Reverse to 1st, neutral drops, banging gears in the sand, mud at 5000 RPM's, Power braking it on dry pavement, 4 wheel drive smoke show trying to pull my buddies Ford out of a 20 ft ditch :_order:  .... I have done it all and these things just keep hanging on!  I have done a fair amount of rock crawling, nothing huge and serious, just average.  I love them, god bless those Japanese engineers!!  :-)

Damn, with abuse like that they must be strong......
I am cheap too, I like the welded rear diff in my truck. Like you say though should be a spool.
I don't think I would ever go to a locker in the rear.

truck sound crazy.....welcome to the board.....you gotta post pics of that thing somewhere !

Stewy

Yeah sure ... I would be glad to.  It is not a "rock crawler" or what most would call a "serious trail rig" but it is VERY functional and dependable!  I love it when I can just get in it and go and not worry about stuff.  I am now 36 and built it when I was 30 ... then it was fun to work on and now .... not so much anymore but once in awhile is fine.

I will try and get some pic's up soon.  Thanks for the hospitality!

I will try to do so tonight or this weekend at the latest.  Our last trip out (this last weekend) one of the guys got some awesome pic's and put them on a disk.  it will be easy for me to post them.  I probably should post them on a new thread and not detour to much from what this thread originally started as.
