ifs rear axles are not stronger but they are wider the extra width will noticabley increase flex in the rear and in most cases help keep the tires from rubbing the frame when flexing

So what years can I get a rear from, and is it just a bolt in and bolt out? and also what about wheel spacers up front to equal the difference in length or does that really matter?

1986-1995.5? i think that the tacomas started in 1995.5 and im not shure but they might have a different rear end basicly any ifs 4x4 toyota thats not a tacoma i think to make the front match the rear you will want 1.5 in wheel spacers for the front (i think) you dont need to make the front match the rear.

Is there any benefit to it, sounds like more money more work.

sorry about that :smack: , I was talking about the spacers up front. I don't see how not having them could cause damage or mess up anything with alignment, but i don't know.

So what about gears, i was going to go 5:29s but people tell me they heat up. So wouldnt a thinner oil help that. I mean there always is 4:88s

if your going 35's then id recomend 5.29's whoever told you they would "over heat" is on crack they are a little weeker than 4:88 so if it isnt gunna be driven on the road that much than you could go with 4.88s for the strength if your going with 33s then the 4:88s will be just about right

If you are locked f/r and have roc protection then you could get away with 33's but with 35's you are golden. Not much will be in your way. I wouldnt worry about problems with the 5.29's you have to beat um pretty hard to break uhm. I would just go with 35's first cause you dont want to go with 33's and then wish you had 35's you wont be dissapointed with them. Plus you get the cool dude points with 35's

:headscratch: Dont waste your money, weld the rear and put either a selectable locker...arb or elocker...or an aussie/lockright in the front.

I've got a Detroit Truetrac in the rear.  It does pretty well off road.  My ride is still ifs  :shudder: , so the torque-biased limited slip is more than enough at this point.  The reason I didn't do a full locker was because of the amount of winter daily driving I do.  The truetrac does really well on the ice out here in Wyoming.  For wheeling, I'd recomend a selectable locker like an arb or a toyota electric locker, just because I'd still like to drive my truck to work and to the trails.  For a weekend toy, there's some very good reasons to go welded or spooled.

My truck is my dd and I am going to be putting a welded rear in. Luckily we dont get ice or snow where I live so I wont have to worry bout that. Im sure though ill have fun when the rainy season comes. If you dont want to weld the rear then leave the front open and put a Truetrc in the rear.
